Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Completion of the Medical Assistant Apprentice Program and passage of the Medical Assistant Certification Exam within one year of employment.
  • Injection certification within six months of employment.

Responsibilities
  • Interview patients; measure and record vital signs, including pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height, using age-appropriate tools.
  • Chart patients’ chief complaints, patient intake elements, and other basic Medical Assistant documentation.
  • Perform orthostatic vital signs and document them appropriately in the electronic medical record.
  • Perform basic autoclaving, spore checks, autoclave cleaning, and instrument wrapping and packaging.
  • Prepare examination rooms between patient visits and keep them stocked.
  • Operate electrocardiographs, oxygen saturation monitors, vision and hearing testing equipment, and sphygmomanometers; perform ear and eye irrigations, peak flow testing, and nebulizer procedures.
  • Administer medications, injections, and immunizations according to clinic policy and practitioner or registered nurse direction, including proper dose calculations and the seven rights of medication administration.
  • Set up, assist with, and clean up after minor procedures, including Pap tests, wet mounts, rapid strep tests, mole removals, and minor laceration procedures.
  • Set up and assist with age-appropriate well-child examinations and Child Health and Disability Prevention visits, including immunizations and accurate documentation.
  • Follow universal precautions, including handwashing and appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
  • Perform HCG, Micral, and rapid strep testing and quality control according to site-specific laboratory guidelines; obtain laboratory specimens and cultures.
  • Obtain diabetic laboratory measurements at the beginning of patient visits, including dermal sticks, hemoglobin, A1c, blood sugar, and urine Micral testing, according to the diabetes health care maintenance protocol.
  • Schedule appointments and follow-up visits according to clinic procedures.
  • Clean and disinfect medical areas according to standard medical asepsis practices, including examination rooms, hallways, and other areas.
  • Perform chart scrubbing and update the Health Care Maintenance function in the electronic medical record.
  • Perform EPIC workflows for Medical Assistant duties, including standard intake, telephone documentation, refill encounter preparation and routing, PHQ, MAR, Meaningful Use, and management of provider in-basket messages.
  • Adhere to the clinic attendance policy.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities designated by the supervisor.
