  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program is required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • Exceptional customer service and telephone etiquette are required.
  • Ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow is required.
  • Computer and/or electronic medical record experience is required.
  • The employee must be able to communicate and exchange accurate information with patients, staff, and medical providers.
  • The employee must be able to constantly move about the office to assist patients, staff, and medical providers.
Responsibilities
  • Place patients in examination rooms and document the electronic medical record, medications, vital signs, and the main reason for the visit.
  • Perform screening and measurement procedures, including height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature.
  • Set up and prepare patients and equipment for examinations and special procedures as needed.
  • Collect blood or other laboratory specimens as requested by the physician.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests.
  • Enter proposed orders into the electronic medical record for licensed independent provider review and approval.
  • Obtain previous test results from outside laboratories, radiology providers, and physicians’ offices.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions to patients clearly and effectively.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies according to regulations.
  • Maintain adequate medical inventory in each examination room.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of each examination room.
  • Prepare rooms after each patient and for specific procedures as needed.
  • Order supplies as needed.
  • Follow Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines.
  • Perform administrative duties as needed, including answering phones and scheduling appointments.
  • Create and update telephone encounters when reporting and responding to patients’ medical concerns and requests, and forward them to appropriate staff and medical providers.
  • Adhere to the patient-flow protocol: reception, registration, triage, laboratories, and escort to the provider.
  • Adhere to the visit-completion protocol: receive encounter and referral forms, schedule next appointments, schedule outside referrals at the appointed time, and update the visit log.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by management.
