Requirements
  • Significant experience successfully leading and managing operations within the DOE complex, national laboratories or in a similarly large and complex international organizations in support of science and technology.
  • Prior experience with operations of a technical complex, including general and business operations oversight, leadership, and strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change through influence and deliver measurable results (increased awareness, higher customer satisfaction, increased engagement, etc.).
  • Strong relationship builder and communicator with experience leading diverse teams, developing an organization-wide strategy for program excellence, engaging community partners, and collaborating with senior management.
  • Ability to gain the trust and confidence of stakeholders and key decision makers, and act on their cumulative interests.
  • Must be results driven, with a distinguished record of accomplishments, characterized by acting with the highest levels of integrity and ethical standards.
  • Demonstrated success developing and monitoring systems to manage both operational and programmatic work that involve high levels of collaboration.
  • Comprehensive skill in oral, public speaking and written communication skills and ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships, and in motivating a multidisciplinary scientific and technical staff.
Responsibilities
  • Has overall responsibility for the operations of Photon Science Directorate and the Advanced Photon Source.
  • Is a key member of the directorate senior leadership team.
  • Collaborates to develop PSC strategic plans with a focus on operation and sustainability of the facility with a 10-year horizon.
  • Provides technical/functional leadership in the integration of varied resources needed to meet safety, technical, and fiscal requirements of the Advanced Photon Source.
  • Provides leadership and management to ensure that the operation mission is successful and core values of the directorate and the laboratory are put into practice.
  • Oversees business functions such as PSC Portfolio Management Office, Finances, Human Resources and Safety.
  • Collaborates with the executive management team (directorate & laboratory) to develop and implement plans for the operational infrastructure of systems, processes, and personnel designed to accommodate the operational objectives of the APS.
  • Collaborates seamlessly with APS Division Directors to ensure that PSC has access to appropriate capabilities for sustained, high-reliability operations.
  • Ensures an active safety culture is present across the directorate and actively contributes to the continuous improvement process; engages with staff members, users, partners, and contractors through active safety leadership.
  • Serves as the primary interface with the Deputy Laboratory Director for Operations/COO. Serves as a directorate liaison to the Laboratory Operations functions, especially as a key point of contact to PSC for Infrastructure Services, Business Information Services, Laboratory Performance Management and Financial Management and Procurement Services, among others.
  • Works collaboratively with the U.S. light sources and international partners. Monitors and analyzes factors and trends in the DOE scientific user facilities and across international facilities which may affect PSC and identifies and implements needed adaptations in strategy to drive continuous operational improvement. Identifies and shares best practices with other BES X-ray light sources and neutron sources.
  • Acts as a catalyst for change by developing and promoting new ideas and improvements that positively influence the directorate.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience at a large-scale user facility or with accelerator operations is desirable but not required.
  • Formal project management experience handling substantial, cross-functional, and mission critical projects is preferred.
  • Existing Q clearance or the ability to obtain one is preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of DOE and laboratory policies including environmental, safety and health (ES&H) policies and practices is preferred.

Researchers at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory have developed GridMind, an agentic AI system designed to assist power grid operators through natural language interaction. The system functions as a reasoning co-pilot for control rooms, simplifying complex grid management tasks. GridMind employs a multi-agent architecture where specialised AI agents handle different functions, such as power scheduling and weather-based contingency planning. Large language models coordinate these agents to analyse situations, reason across different tasks and provide explainable recommendations. The system transforms technical analysis into conversational support whilst maintaining rigorous accuracy. Tests on standard power grid models demonstrated that GridMind consistently produced correct results across multiple state-of-the-art language models. The technology aims to accelerate decision-making by integrating disconnected workflows into a coherent reasoning engine.

AI adviser helps Argonne's robotic lab discover advanced electronic materials in just 64 experiments

A research team led by the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory has developed an AI adviser that optimises machine learning algorithms during autonomous experiments, accelerating discovery of advanced electronic materials. The system was applied to Polybot, Argonne's AI-guided robotic laboratory, to investigate mixed ion-electron conducting polymers for wearable electronics and energy storage. The adviser evaluates algorithm performance in real time and communicates insights to scientists who refine experimental plans. It reduced the study to just 64 experiments from over 4,300 possible combinations. During testing, the adviser suggested switching AI algorithms, leading to significant performance improvements, and identified deposition speed as a key performance driver. The research was published in Nature Chemical Engineering and included collaborators from the University of Chicago, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and other institutions.
