Norwegian-German submarine gets Ottawa's nod as Canada and Norway move towards enhanced defence pact. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in his latest visit to Canada. Photo: Photo: Mark Carney/X Ottawa/IBNS-CMEDIA: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre agreed Sunday to pursue an enhanced defence cooperation agreement next year, building on Canada's selection of the TKMS 212CD submarine as the preferred supplier for its next fleet of submarines. The announcement came as Støre visited Ottawa, where the two leaders issued a joint statement outlining plans to deepen cooperation across Arctic security, space, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, climate and support for Ukraine. The 212CD submarine, jointly developed by Norway and Germany, will anchor what the joint statement called a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to deepen military, industrial and technological ties between the two countries. The enhanced defence agreement is expected to follow the conclusion of negotiations on Canada's Patrol Submarine Project and build on an existing 2023 bilateral defence memorandum. On Arctic security, the two governments pointed to a bilateral Arctic Dialogue established earlier this year covering surveillance, situational awareness and interoperability, along with a Canadian Coast Guard-Norwegian Coast Guard partnership signed in June under which the two services have already run joint training exercises in Arctic waters. Polar Knowledge Canada and the Norwegian Polar Institute signed a new memorandum of understanding to expand joint research in the Arctic and Antarctic. The Canadian Space Agency and Norwegian Space Agency finalized a separate memorandum to deepen cooperation on space-based and dual-use capabilities, a partnership reflected in new business agreements: Kongsberg and MDA Space signed an agreement on multi-domain and space-based surveillance capabilities, while Kongsberg and Telesat agreed to explore collaboration involving Telesat's Lightspeed satellite network. On critical minerals, the Geological Survey of Canada and the Geological Survey of Norway agreed to collaborate on joint mineral mapping and the exchange of geoscientific expertise, aimed at supporting more resilient supply chains. On Ukraine, the two leaders reaffirmed support for what they called a just and lasting peace backed by robust security guarantees. The Canadian Commercial Corporation and the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency signed a letter of intent establishing a government-to-government framework for procuring military assets for Ukraine. The two countries are also set to co-host, along with Ukraine, a ministerial conference in Toronto next week on returning Ukrainian children, detained civilians and prisoners of war. The joint statement noted that more than fifty Norwegian companies have established a long-term presence in Canada. Among recent deals cited, Kongsberg has invested $76.5 million in a Marine Innovation Simulation Centre of Excellence with the British Columbia Institute of Technology and is partnering with NAV Canada on a remote digital air traffic services project. Norway's Equinor is also advancing the Bay du Nord offshore oil project roughly 500 kilometres off Newfoundland, in an agreement with the provincial government. Carney and Støre also agreed to deepen cooperation on artificial intelligence, including the testing and responsible deployment of AI systems and its use in public services, building on a joint statement on sovereign technology and AI cooperation issued in March. On climate and oceans, the two countries reaffirmed commitments under the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and Canada said it looks forward to continued collaboration with Norway as it prepares to host the 12th Its Ocean Conference in Halifax in 2027. The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact going forward. (Reporting by Suman Das)
NAV CANADA and Indra Group join forces to integrate drones into Canadian skies. Photo: Indra NAV CANADA has selected Indra Group as its technology partner to develop and implement the Flight Information Management System for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, known as rFIMS, which will be the central digital platform of the future Canadian framework for the safe integration of drones into its airspace. The agreement was signed during Airspace World 2026, held in Lisbon, considered the main global meeting of the air traffic management sector, and represents a decisive step towards the safe coexistence of manned and unmanned aircraft in Canada. The rFIMS system will provide the digital services and interfaces needed to connect NAV CANADA with the ecosystem of drone traffic management service providers operating in the country, enabling the sharing of critical information, coordination of operations, and a common view of the airspace. First, from left to right, Víctor Martínez, General Manager of ATM at Indra Group, and David Sheppard, Vice President and Chief Technology and Information Officer at NAV CANADA. Photo: Indra This platform will lay the foundation for safe and sustainable growth of drone operations in Canada, in line with the exponential expansion forecasts for this sector managed by the Canadian air navigation service provider. The solution is based on technologies developed by Indra Group within the framework of the European SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking programs and already deployed in pioneering initiatives for the integration of drones in Spanish airspace, which allows monitoring operations and verifying compliance with flight plans. The system will also facilitate the secure exchange of information between all stakeholders and provide a high level of situational awareness for ecosystem participants, reinforcing operational safety levels. Indra Group will deploy the technology progressively, with initial capabilities planned to become operational in 2029, which will include essential flight management, monitoring and connectivity services for drone operations. From this first phase, the platform will evolve towards more advanced functionalities, incorporating operational intelligence and tactical conflict management capabilities to improve both the safety and efficiency of Canadian airspace. According to a recent study by NAV CANADA, the country faces exponential growth in the drone sector, which represents a significant economic opportunity that will only be fully realized if the appropriate digital infrastructure is in place to support new operations. Drone in flight. Photo: Indra Indra Group already plays a key role in the modernization of Canadian air traffic thanks to the supply of advanced simulation solutions for the training of air traffic management professionals and its participation, together with NAV CANADA, in international innovation initiatives such as the iTEC collaboration. This new project strengthens the relationship with the Canadian air navigation service provider and represents an advance in positioning Indra Group as one of the leading technology partners in the convergence between conventional air traffic management and drone traffic management. The company has a comprehensive offering for drone operations management and has recently strengthened its capabilities with the acquisition of GuardianUTM's assets, expanding its catalog of solutions for U-space and for unmanned air traffic management.
