Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • Two to three years of supervisory experience in a customer-focused custodial operation.
  • Specialized knowledge of effective custodial and housekeeping procedures and cleaning systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, and web-based applications.
  • Ability to understand, explain, and enforce departmental and University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, write, perform financial calculations, and complete administrative duties.
  • A valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.
  • Successful completion of an annual Driver’s License check.
  • DMV background checks and clearances before hire.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods, access non-handicap accessible and confined workspaces, climb stairs and ladders, and move between campus buildings.
  • Ability to enter various buildings, industrial plants, and construction sites.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment where necessary.
  • Physical ability to perform and demonstrate the custodial duties required of assigned crews.
  • Ability to lead a team and serve as an active team member.
  • Ability to solve complex problems involving multiple parties without clear lines of authority.
  • Ability to implement data-driven decision-making and process improvements.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility in assignments and work under constrained resources, tight deadlines, and emergency-response conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise daily custodial services operations in assigned areas, including routine and specialty work.
  • Ensure custodial services adhere to customer-determined standards.
  • Develop and continually adjust cleaning schedules and routines to meet cleanliness and sanitary-condition expectations and environmental health and safety requirements.
  • Provide hands-on training to custodians on cleaning procedures, equipment and cleaning-solution use, building security, and environmental health and safety regulations.
  • Communicate with custodial staff, community members, and customers electronically and face-to-face to support customer service.
  • Use Microsoft Office software and customer electronic work-order systems to prepare and validate operational data.
  • Meet with staff to address issues and concerns.
  • Implement Green Cleaning procedures and train custodians in Green Cleaning techniques under the FMO Green Cleaning Program.
  • Assign and supervise work performed by hourly custodial employees and subcontracted cleaning services.
  • Perform regular cleaning-quality inspections for all areas.
  • Document inspection results and initiate corrective actions.
  • Implement quality-improvement recommendations from independent third-party cleaning auditors.
  • Manage employee performance and provide counseling or disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Apply performance management in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and Campus Services management practices.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental, University, governmental, customer, workplace safety, environmental, resource-efficiency, recycling, energy-conservation, and building-safety procedures and regulations.
  • Coordinate and supervise customer-requested function setups, snow removal operations, and emergency-condition responses.
  • Maintain records of employee attendance and payroll, work schedules, key-distribution logs, equipment, and supply inventory.
  • Work with departmental human resources representatives to maintain personnel records.
  • Lead, support, or perform assigned special projects, initiatives, and tasks.
Desired Qualifications
  • An understanding of Harvard’s academic, administrative, and collective bargaining agreement structures.
  • In-depth knowledge of cleaning technology and procedures used in a higher-education setting.
  • Working knowledge of network-based systems.
  • Familiarity with handheld computing, equipment diagnostics, bar-coding, and related technologies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole.
