Requirements
  • One to three years of experience providing peer support to people with psychiatric disabilities and/or co-occurring disorders is required.
  • Personal, first-hand experience as a recipient of the mental health system is required, including relevant experience with inpatient hospitalization, outpatient services or therapy, psychiatric medications, or community mental health groups.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license, adequate vehicle insurance when using a personal vehicle, and a safe driving record are required.
  • The candidate must be at least 21 years old, have maintained a valid United States driver's license for at least six months, and pass a driver's screening background check.
  • The ability to perform physically active work, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, lifting at least 25 pounds, and assisting persons served with daily living tasks, is required.
  • The ability to operate a computer and office equipment is required.
  • The ability to communicate with persons served, staff, and external representatives is required.
  • CPR certification is required within the first two weeks of hire.
  • First Aid certification is required within the first two weeks of hire.
  • The employee must become a Certified Peer Specialist or obtain a Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery Recovery Coach Academy certificate of completion within six months of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Join Team Licensed Practitioner of the Healing Arts clinicians to initiate and conduct intake for referred persons served within 72 hours.
  • Welcome, orient, and engage persons served so they understand available services and support.
  • Build trusting relationships and help persons served prepare for goal setting using established protocols.
  • Help persons served complete the 8 Dimensions of Wellness Assessment and Power Statement at intake.
  • Share personal experiences and provide support, education, and advocacy during service and life transitions.
  • Provide warm handoffs to other Team Peer Specialists.
  • Maintain close contact with persons served who struggle with initial or sustained engagement.
  • Promote access to healthcare and employment services, safe housing, community tenure, self-sufficiency, and successful service completion.
  • Support choice, self-determination, participation, and decision-making in treatment, care coordination, and support services.
  • Facilitate peer-support groups and connect persons served with recovery tools, resources, and mutual-help groups for psychiatric conditions and substance use or addiction.
  • Implement peer-support-oriented treatment-plan interventions and complete documentation according to Certified Peer Specialist training standards.
  • Help persons served develop individual and group self-advocacy skills.
  • Provide information and training on recovery and self-management plans, including facilitating Wellness Recovery Action Plan completion.
  • Assist persons served in strengthening relationships with chosen family and friends and linking to community services and recovery-support networks.
  • Provide ongoing problem solving, skill training, side-by-side support, coping techniques, and self-help strategies.
  • Teach, consult, and collaborate with team members to promote recovery values, language, and culture.
  • Onboard, orient, and coach new Team Peer Specialists through shadowing, ethics review, and related training.
  • Model recovery-oriented, person-centered, motivational interviewing, harm-reduction, Housing First, Stages of Change, trauma-informed, culturally competent, and strengths-based approaches.
  • Perform, train, supervise, mentor, and model recovery-oriented interventions, including Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, Housing First, Stages of Change, and Wellness Recovery Action Plans.
  • Supervise Peer Specialists, provide training and consultation, address ethical conflicts, support peer voices in team interactions, mentor staff, and review performance issues with the Team Leader.
  • Lead the Team Peer Specialists' efforts to organize and deliver peer support.
  • Visit all group living environments and supervised independent living settings regularly to provide peer support.
  • Facilitate Wellness Recovery Action Plan groups.
  • Receive monthly and as-needed consultation, education, and training from the Director of Recovery Services.
  • Participate in the Lead Peer Specialist Community of Practice Workgroup and provide feedback on policy, program development, and work decisions.
  • May co-facilitate the Peer Specialist Community of Practice Workgroup.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited school is strongly preferred.
  • An associate's degree is strongly preferred.
