  • Significant experience in large commercial surety underwriting, including new business and portfolio management of complex or high-exposure accounts.
  • Demonstrated success in territory development and broker distribution management, including producer plans and target account strategies.
  • Advanced ability to analyze complex financial statements, including profitability, leverage, cash flow, working capital, liquidity, backlog, and work-in-progress trends.
  • Experience evaluating credit quality and capacity of privately held and publicly traded companies, including emerging deterioration and concentration risk.
  • Experience reviewing bond forms, indemnity agreements, collateral arrangements, and other risk-mitigation structures for larger or more complex accounts.
  • Ability to structure, negotiate, and recommend underwriting terms that balance growth objectives with risk discipline.
  • Experience monitoring and managing a territory or portfolio of surety business, including trend analysis, close-out strategies, and identification of adverse developments.
  • Strong marketing and relationship-management skills for working with brokers and influencing new business opportunities.
  • Knowledge of contract and commercial surety operations, products, procedures, and practices.
  • Expertise in surety lines of business, ratings, customer environments, markets, underwriting risks, field underwriting operations, and underwriting practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for disseminating senior leadership's vision and motivating a large agency force.
  • Ability to set work priorities and recommend solutions to upper management.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment within underwriting authority and company underwriting standards.
  • Demonstrated decision-making ability in customer service, work processing, underwriting selection and rating, and best-practice compliance issues.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
Responsibilities
  • Identify expansion opportunities within the territory by partnering with brokers on new business development, producer planning, and target account strategies.
  • Contribute to territory-level business planning by tracking production, visibility, and marketing trends and activities.
  • Support the negotiation and execution of indemnity, collateral, and other risk-mitigation arrangements on larger or more complex accounts.
  • Provide consultative underwriting guidance and training to newer underwriters on complex risks.
  • Monitor portfolio trends across the territory to identify concentration risk, emerging credit concerns, and close-out strategies.
  • Coordinate with Claims, Legal, Finance, Compliance, and Operations on complex account matters and operational processing opportunities.
  • Maintain awareness of regional market conditions, industry developments, and competitive dynamics affecting underwriting strategy.
  • Assist with remediation strategies for stressed or deteriorating accounts, including action planning, communication strategy, and monitoring requirements.
  • Lead an underwriting team of surety territory managers, field underwriters, and underwriting associates.
  • Establish and maintain agency and broker relationships for sales growth and distribution expansion.
  • Independently underwrite accounts within the authority level granted to the role and underwriting appetite.
  • Analyze portfolio and individual account performance and develop actions for profitable growth.
  • Review and approve staff underwriting decisions and ensure compliance with legal, organizational, business, and strategic objectives.
  • Determine department priorities, workflow, and service standards, and manage performance measurements.
  • Plan and integrate territory sales plans, financial and operational goals, budgets, and timelines.
  • Direct associates and provide performance management, salary planning and administration, organizational planning, hiring, and placement.
  • Drive sales strategies to develop new business, improve retention, and maintain profitability.
  • Meet with clients to enhance relationships and drive business results, including handling escalated customer service issues.
  • Consult with agents, brokers, internal teams, and Home Office leaders on business opportunities and accounts requiring higher authority.
  • Communicate strategic direction, operational plans, policies, procedures, and financial budgets to internal associates and external partners.
  • Develop and maintain internal and external partnerships across Claims, Marketing, Information Technology, and related functions.
  • Manage associate training within the surety organization and coach territory managers and field underwriters on developing profitable territories.
  • Travel extensively in the field and work extended or non-standard hours when required.
Desired Qualifications
  • An undergraduate degree in business, insurance, or a related field is preferred.
  • Actively pursuing the Associate in Fidelity and Surety Bonding, Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, or another insurance or finance-related certification is desired.
  • Ten years of commercial or contract surety or related underwriting experience is preferred.
  • Significant business management and people leadership experience is desired.
  • Familiarity with other company products is preferred.

Nationwide hits record $73.2B in sales as insurer enters 100th year

Nationwide has reported record financial results for 2025, entering its centennial year with total adjusted capital of $32.8 billion, the highest in its 100-year history.
