Requirements
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required at the time of hire.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
  • Mental health certification from the Canadian Nurses Association, or willingness to obtain it within two years.
  • Current certification in non-violent crisis intervention is required.
  • At least 1–5 years of recent acute child/adolescent psychiatric experience.
  • Advanced skill in assessing and managing acute mental health and concurrent disorders, including mental status examinations, suicide risk assessment, management of aggressive behaviour, biopsychosocial assessment, physical health assessment, treatment, and transitional care.
  • Ability to prioritize care and make informed autonomous decisions.
  • Ability to work with complex and difficult patient and family situations.
  • Physical ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring management of aggressive behaviour.
  • Proficiency using computers, typing notes, and using electronic health records.
  • Excellent organization, time management, professionalism, and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent attendance, punctuality, and work record.
  • Ability to establish a therapeutic alliance.
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, appropriate community agencies.
  • Problem-solving and conflict/crisis resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of Ontario's Mental Health Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Competent knowledge of Standards of Mental Health Nursing Practice and Scope of Nursing Practice.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Compliance with the employer's immunization and vaccination policies, including proof of vaccination or a documented medical exemption, and pre-employment medical clearance.
Responsibilities
  • Function as a member of the multidisciplinary team using the total Patient Care Model.
  • Provide care to an acutely ill and high-risk psychiatric population, including suicidal and complex individuals and people with severe depressive or psychotic illnesses and personality and behaviour disorders.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate treatment plans in collaboration with other team members.
  • Liaise with community agencies and professionals to plan follow-up and aftercare.
