About the job

Requirements
  • One to three years of hands-on experience in additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping, model making, or manufacturing, including regular 3D printing.
  • Ability to prepare, slice, set up, and troubleshoot builds using at least one additive process, such as fused deposition modeling/fused filament fabrication or stereolithography, and perform routine printer maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of a 3D computer-aided design tool, including basic part modifications, and the ability to interpret drawings, dimensions, and mechanical fits.
  • Experience with calipers or similar inspection tools, basic post-processing and assembly, and accurate build and inspection records.
  • Ability to work on-site in San Carlos, California, follow equipment and material-handling procedures, and communicate clearly with engineers.
Responsibilities
  • Own the day-to-day preparation, fabrication, and inspection of 3D-printed prototypes for NEO.
  • Create or modify prototype parts and simple fixtures in computer-aided design with engineers, applying design for additive manufacturing.
  • Select materials and build parameters for the intended use, prepare print files, operate and maintain printers, and complete post-processing.
  • Troubleshoot failed builds, inspect critical dimensions, and support assembly checks and functional testing.
  • Turn test results into practical design and process improvements while maintaining a safe, organized prototyping workspace.
  • Deliver labeled, inspected prototypes that meet engineer-defined dimensional, fit, and functional criteria on agreed schedules, and flag deviations before parts enter assembly or testing.
  • Improve first-pass build success and turnaround by tracking failures, testing process changes, and verifying results.
  • Keep printers ready for planned builds through calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and timely replenishment of materials and consumables.
  • Make builds repeatable with revision-controlled computer-aided design and print files, process settings, material records, and documented inspection results.
  • Prepare and monitor builds, manage the print queue, and balance part quality, turnaround, and material use.
  • Apply practical design judgment by connecting geometry, material properties, orientation, supports, and tolerances to a part’s intended function.
  • Isolate equipment-, material-, and file-related causes of defects, verify fixes, and escalate issues beyond training.
  • Inspect work, maintain accurate records, communicate risks early, and coordinate priorities with engineers.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with multiple additive processes, such as fused deposition modeling/fused filament fabrication, stereolithography/digital light processing, selective laser sintering, or Multi Jet Fusion, and a range of engineering polymers or resins.
  • Experience managing material drying and storage, support removal, curing, finishing, and dimensional consistency across repeated builds.
  • Familiarity with parametric computer-aided design tools such as SolidWorks, NX, Creo, or Fusion; basic geometric dimensioning and tolerancing; and fixture or assembly-aid design.
  • Robotics, automotive, or aerospace prototyping experience, or technical training in additive manufacturing, machining, or a related field.

About the company

1X is an engineering and robotics company that builds android robots to augment human labor in real-world work settings. The company’s flagship product, EVE, can move through spaces, turn corners, and open doors, using shared autonomy to operate with human guidance as needed. The product relies on specialized actuator systems paired with artificial intelligence to perform tasks that humans would normally do, enabling enterprises to boost productivity and address labor shortages. 1X differentiates itself by commercializing enterprise-ready androids and targeting the US market, leveraging its unique actuator design and AI stack to enable smooth, human-like movements that can navigate real environments. The company’s goal is to provide reliable, scalable robotic helpers that can carry out a range of tasks autonomously or with partial human control, increasing operational efficiency for enterprise customers.

What believers are saying

  • 1X reported 10,000 NEO preorders within five days after October 2025 launch.
  • Hayward capacity reaches 10,000 robots yearly, supporting 2026 deliveries and ramp learning.
  • 1XWM released in 2026 strengthens robot reasoning and improves NEO task performance.

What critics are saying

  • NEO still needs remote human operators, exposing privacy backlash and autonomy skepticism in 2026.
  • A $20,000 household robot faces weak demand if buyers reject teleoperated chores.
  • If NEO failures dominate, 1X loses trust and the consumer humanoid market stalls.

What makes 1X unique

  • 1X opened Hayward factory in April 2026, vertically integrating humanoid production.
  • NEO targets consumer homes, not warehouses, with $20,000 early-access pricing and subscriptions.
  • EQT plans 10,000 NEO deployments from 2026 through 2030 across portfolio companies.

$20,000 humanoid robot Neo folds laundry and waters plants — but needs remote human help to work

Robotics company 1X has launched preorders for Neo, billed as the world's first consumer-ready humanoid robot, priced at $20,000 or $499 monthly for a six-month commitment. The 5-foot-6-inch robot can perform household tasks like unloading dishwashers and watering plants, and features a built-in large language model. Neo has a soft body, moves slowly, carries up to 55 pounds, and runs for four hours per charge. However, the robot occasionally falls over and requires significant human assistance. Complex tasks require remote operation by 1X employees wearing VR headsets. The robot features cameras and can be remotely accessed for training purposes. 1X claims privacy safeguards are in place, though concerns remain about having a camera-equipped robot in homes.

OpenAI-backed 1X releases world model to power humanoid robots

Norwegian humanoid robot company 1X, backed by OpenAI, has released a new world model called 1X World Model (1XWM) designed to enhance robots' understanding and reasoning in the physical world. The model generates future videos from text and initial images during inference, then infers robot actions from these predictions. Trained on web videos and limited robot data, 1XWM targets 1X's Neo humanoid robot, currently in mass production for home use. Neo can generate predictive videos and reason about household tasks. However, the company noted the current model requires a dual modelling process for video and action generation and has not yet achieved true zero-shot execution. The development aims to give robots general behavioural capabilities for domestic scenarios.
