What believers are saying

  • Chicago.com arrives in fall 2026 with current financial projections close to break-even.
  • CPM won two 2026 Murrow Awards, signaling still-strong editorial quality.
  • Illinois Public Broadcasters now fund two Springfield reporters, widening coverage without full CPM funding.

What critics are saying

  • 2024 layoffs and 2025 buyouts cut Sun-Times staff by roughly 20%.
  • SAG-AFTRA filed an unfair labor complaint after CPM withheld staffing and financial data.
  • If chicago.com misses sponsorship goals, CPM's break-even plan collapses into another cuts cycle.

What makes Chicago Public Media unique

  • WBEZ and the Sun-Times share one nonprofit platform, unlike most local rivals.
  • Chicago.com launches in fall 2026 as a digital hub for civic participation.
  • CPM can package audio, print, and community spaces across one Chicago audience.

Responsible Ai Development In The Shadow Of Profit Is A Balancing Act, These Experts Say

This is a guest post by Dr. Michael Akinwumi, the chief responsible AI officer for the National Fair Housing Alliance, and Dr. Dominique Harrison, an independent tech equity expert. In an era defined by rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, two significant battles emerge: the skepticism toward AI developers’ ability to create safe, secure and trustworthy systems, and the tension between ethical development and the pursuit of profit from private investment in innovation. This dichotomy raises a crucial question: Can we have a future where AI and humans live together in a world where harmony among safety, security, trust and profitability exist for the benefit of all?
