- No education or prior experience is required, but candidates must demonstrate an interest in learning and practicing horticulture.
- The candidate must be capable of lifting 40 pounds and willing and able to work outdoors in varied weather conditions, including temperature extremes, rain, and snow.
- The candidate must demonstrate effective oral communication skills, including the ability to follow instructions, ask questions when challenges arise, and work efficiently independently and in a team setting.
- Support farming operations at the SUS community farms through planting, weeding, watering, pruning, composting, and harvesting.
- Support landscape management at SUS facilities and other locations through lawn mowing, weed-whacking, raking, and sweeping.
- Support horticultural carpentry and masonry projects, including constructing raised beds, building trellising structures, and installing water features.
- Assist in developing, making, and packaging SUS Urban Farms products, including assisting with beekeeping and honey harvesting.
- Assist and/or instruct during workshops, trainings, and other activities.
- Assist with special events, including the annual Harvest Luncheon.
- Preferred experience in horticulture, farming, gardening, landscaping, or similar work.
- Comfort with or experience using basic gardening and landscaping implements, including power equipment used in landscaping or garden carpentry.
S:US helps New Yorkers who face homelessness, disability, behavioral health and addiction challenges, poverty, criminal justice involvement, and trauma access a wide range of supports across New York City and Long Island. It coordinates services such as case management, housing and stabilization, behavioral health treatment, recovery supports, rehabilitation, advocacy, and community-based programs tailored to each person’s needs. By linking housing, health, justice, and community resources, S:US delivers integrated, place-based services that address multiple barriers at once rather than focusing on a single issue. The goal is to help people lead purposeful lives, improve neighborhoods, and break the cycle of poverty for current and future generations of New Yorkers.
