Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Current, valid Oregon Certified Nursing Assistant certification is required under the 2025 unified certification requirements.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • The role requires strong customer service, interpersonal, observational, and communication skills.
  • The employee must organize and prioritize work effectively, follow verbal and written instructions with attention to detail, and work collaboratively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • The employee must have basic computer and electronic documentation proficiency.
  • The employee must communicate clearly and effectively in English through reading, writing, and speaking.
  • The employee must be able to frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch; lift up to 50 pounds when required; and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • The role requires regular exposure to body fluids and use of standard precautions.
  • The employee must use personal computers and electronic health record systems.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care, including bathing, grooming, feeding, ambulating, toileting, and repositioning.
  • Assist with safe patient transfers and mobility using assistive devices and safe handling equipment.
  • Monitor and document patient cases, vital signs, pain levels, height, weight, intake/output, and report abnormalities.
  • Document care accurately and promptly in the patient medical record.
  • Obtain patient specimens and perform point-of-care testing, including blood glucose, urine screening, and occult blood testing, within the scope of training and as directed by the registered nurse or physician.
  • Assist with clinical interventions such as incentive spirometry, warm and cold therapies, bladder scans, and deep breathing exercises as directed by the registered nurse.
  • Apply and remove restraints and sequential compression devices as directed by nursing staff.
  • Respond to patient call lights and escalate needs outside the Certified Nursing Assistant scope to a licensed nurse.
  • Observe and communicate changes in patient condition, behavior, and needs to the registered nurse.
  • Provide one-to-one patient observation for safety and fall prevention as needed.
  • Reinforce patient education and orientation as directed by the registered nurse.
  • Answer phones, transfer calls, relay messages, and assist visitors to support communication across the unit.
  • Use electronic health records in Epic and other hospital systems to input, retrieve, and verify patient information, run reports, and enter charges.
  • Process discharge paperwork, transport charts, and scanned or faxed materials.
  • Coordinate nurse call system assignments, manage staff phone assignments, and monitor call response status.
  • Maintain unit inventory, order supplies, and keep storage and workspaces organized.
  • Assist physicians with electronic medical record tasks and access as requested.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on documentation and unit functions as directed by leadership.
  • Retrieve and transport blood products, specimens, and documents as needed.
  • Perform other duties within the Certified Nursing Assistant scope of practice.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Previous Certified Nursing Assistant experience in a hospital or acute care setting.
