Nearly 1.7 million pounds of brown sugar, powdered sugar recalled over potential wheat contamination. The products were distributed in eight states across the United States. Published: 9/23/2026, 11:09:48 PM EDT Nearly 1.7 million pounds of brown and powdered sugar sold under the Good & Gather, United, and Crystal Sugar brands have been recalled over possible wheat kernel contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The products were distributed in eight states across the United States. "Food allergies can be life-threatening," the FDA says. Wheat is a major food allergen, and exposure can cause a serious reaction in someone allergic to it. The FDA posted the recall on Sept. 21. The recall covers about 1.27 million pounds of light brown sugar and 426,500 pounds of powdered sugar. The FDA recall lists the amounts as 12,678 and 4,265 hundredweights. One hundredweight equals 100 pounds. The FDA cites potential wheat kernel contamination as the reason for both recalls. For shoppers, the affected products include 2-pound bags of Good & Gather light brown sugar and powdered sugar. The brown sugar carries UPC 0 85239-08454 0, while the powdered sugar carries UPC 0 85239-08455 7, according to the FDA listing. Larger bags are also affected. The FDA lists 50-pound bags of United light brown sugar, 50-pound bags of United 6X powdered sugar, and 25-pound bags of Crystal Sugar powdered sugar. According to the FDA recall, the products were distributed in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Consumers concerned about wheat contamination should match both their product and its batch code to the FDA record. The FDA lists codes from MHD26223 through MHD26229 for the brown sugar. The powdered sugar codes vary by brand: Crystal Sugar lists MHD26230, and Good & Gather lists codes from MHD26223 through MHD26229. The recalled 50-pound bags of United 6X powdered sugar carry batch codes MHD26223 through MHD26227, or MHD26229, according to the FDA. People with a wheat allergy should avoid the recalled sugar products. According to the FDA's food allergy guidance, symptoms can include hives, swelling, vomiting, and difficulty breathing. The FDA advises people with a known food allergy who develop symptoms to seek medical attention. "Often, recalled products may be returned to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. If not, dispose of the product properly - if it's contaminated, wrap it securely before putting it in the trash," says the FDA. "Do not give the product to others, such as a food bank or a pet," the FDA added. About 2.4 million U.S. children and adults have a wheat allergy, according to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE). Food allergies send an estimated 3.4 million people in the United States to the emergency room each year, according to FARE. Conversation Conversations are moderated.
