Requirements
  • Graduate of a Medical Imaging Program.
  • Possess a current radiography license as required by the state board where services will be provided.
  • Possess national certification as defined by the location where services will be provided; this includes Registered Radiography Technologist certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists upon hire in Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia, or within six months of graduation from a Medical Imaging Program in Pennsylvania.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete state and, if applicable, federal criminal background checks as required for regulated areas.
  • Interact positively with patients, families, and members of the health care team.
  • Prioritize and deal with a variety of situations simultaneously.
  • Improvise with altered positioning techniques, equipment manipulation, and accessory devices when routine positioning is compromised by a patient's condition, age, or ability.
  • Differentiate various shades of gray and color as depicted on a monitor or photograph.
  • Stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Rotate through all diagnostic areas, including fluoroscopy, mobile imaging, routine imaging, operating room, endoscopy, and orthopedics, to develop technical skills.
  • Perform imaging procedures based on patient assessment, service requests, and imaging protocols.
  • Produce optimal-quality images using imaging equipment and systems for image delivery and archiving.
  • Select exposure factors based on patient size, condition, and pathology while minimizing radiation exposure.
  • Minimize radiation exposure to self, patients, and staff through shielding, collimation, application of the inverse square law, and minimizing repeat exposures.
  • Maintain expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology relevant to imaging to optimize procedures and ensure patient safety.
  • Assess patient needs and provide imaging-related comfort, hygiene, and range-of-motion support.
  • Prepare contrast agents, specific pharmaceuticals, and sterile trays for imaging procedures according to procedural guidelines and protocols.
  • Educate patients about radiographic procedures by explaining procedures and answering questions.
  • Promote a team approach to Radiology services through positive interactions with technical, support, nursing, and medical staff.
  • Engage in problem solving, crisis management, systems implementation, and performance improvements throughout the hospital to support efficient, high-quality, cost-effective patient care.
  • Perform imaging techniques and patient-care behaviors in accordance with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Code of Ethics, hospital and department policies, state and federal regulations, and The Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Report equipment failures immediately upon identification.
  • Complete required in-services and competencies by their due dates and apply the knowledge gained.
  • Position patients accurately according to established protocols.
  • Participate in coordinating daily workflow.
  • Provide limited clinical instruction to radiology students on patient positioning, technique selection, equipment manipulation, and accessory-device use.
  • Provide clinical supervision and instruction within Radiology program policies and accrediting-body requirements.
  • Ensure that all vital components of the imaging process are completed in their entirety.
