Man City verdict strains UK-UAE ties as billions in investment come into focus.

Man City verdict strains UK-UAE ties as billions in investment come into focus. October 2, 2026 From Dispatch Room The fallout from the legal ruling against Manchester City has reportedly begun spilling beyond football, placing fresh strain on relations between the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates as both governments seek to protect a major investment partnership. The UAE has invested more than £30 billion, about $39.7 billion, in the UK over the past five years, with capital flowing into sectors including defence, technology and life sciences. A further investment summit between the two countries is expected this month, making the timing of the Manchester City controversy particularly sensitive. Explore History Manchester City has become closely associated with Abu Dhabi since its 2008 takeover and has developed into one of the UAE's most prominent international sporting investments. The club was recently found guilty on most counts in the Premier League's long-running financial case, although sanctions remain unresolved and City is challenging the findings. The dispute has already widened beyond the club. Etihad Airways, Manchester City's long-standing sponsor, has rejected suggestions of involvement in improper financial arrangements and is seeking legal advice over the potential damage to its reputation arising from the findings. The wider concern now extends to diplomatic and commercial relations. Both London and Abu Dhabi have strong incentives to prevent the football dispute from disrupting cooperation in strategically important sectors, particularly as the two countries pursue further investment agreements. The Manchester City case has therefore evolved into more than a domestic football governance dispute. Its consequences are increasingly being watched in government and business circles because of the scale of UAE investment in Britain and the importance both countries place on maintaining their economic partnership. Etihad increases sydney-abu Dhabi to twice daily flights.

Etihad increases sydney-abu Dhabi to twice daily flights. Etihad is doubling down on Sydney, literally Etihad Airways will fly twice a day between Sydney and Abu Dhabi from 15 December 2026, adding four weekly services to the ten it currently operates. Flights will be operated by Etihad's modern Airbus A350-1000, of which the UAE flag carrier has ordered 27, with new deliveries continuing in the coming months. The additional flights start just as the Australian summer holiday rush kicks off, when fares to Europe are typically at their highest, and seats on popular dates are hardest to find. The service also comes after Etihad went all-suites in Business Class across Australia, making it the only Gulf carrier with privacy doors on every Australian flight. Etihad has operated to Sydney since 2007, and currently runs a mix of single and double daily flights across the week. From December, every day gets two Sydney flights, taking the route to 14 weekly services and more than 5,000 seats. It also means passengers will no longer need to plan around which days have the extra flight, if it's their preferred departure time. Etihad's increased Sydney flights are already on sale at Etihad.com. Here's how the schedule looks from 15 December 2026. Abu Dhabi, 9:55am Sydney, 6:30am +1 Sydney, 4:50pm Abu Dhabi, 12:25am +1 Abu Dhabi, 9:05pm Sydney, 5:45pm +1 Sydney, 9:30pm Abu Dhabi, 5:00am +1 Etihad Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, Arik De, said the second daily service is about giving travellers more flexibility. "The additional service strengthens connectivity through Abu Dhabi, creating more seamless access to destinations across the Middle East and Europe, while making it easier for travellers to experience Abu Dhabi and discover everything the emirate has to offer as part of their journey." Summing up. Etihad Airways will introduce a second daily A350-1000 flight to Sydney from December, offering travellers more departure times and better connections to Europe, right in the middle of peak season. Etihad's only other Australian destination is Melbourne, served by a daily Boeing 787 flight to Abu Dhabi. Tom Goward Editor in Chief & Aviation Nerd

Israeli airlines are locked out of the UAE as demand remains strong.

Israeli airlines are locked out of the UAE as demand remains strong. Security talks have stalled, leaving Flydubai and Etihad with little direct competition on routes popular with Israeli travelers. Hofit Cohen Ulay 21:16, 23.09.26 Israeli airlines are facing a further delay in resuming flights to the UAE, with security talks between Israeli and Emirati officials failing to produce an agreement that would allow the routes to reopen. The suspension, which is officially due to remain in effect until the end of October, is now expected by Israeli airlines to continue at least through November. The main obstacle is the difficulty Israeli security officials are facing in reaching an agreement with their Emirati counterparts over the conditions under which Israeli carriers could resume operations. The situation has created an unusual imbalance in the market. UAE-based airlines including Flydubai and Etihad continue to operate dozens of flights to Israel each month, many of them carrying Israeli passengers, while Israeli carriers El Al, Israir and Arkia remain unable to operate the same routes. As a result, Israeli demand for the UAE remains high, but Israeli airlines are unable to compete for that traffic, leaving Emirati carriers with effective control of the market. Israeli airlines have been barred from flying to the UAE since Operation "Roaring Lion" because of security concerns. The airlines are now waiting for an intergovernmental agreement that would establish the conditions for their return, but the process has stalled. Airline industry officials argue that the Emirati side has little incentive to accelerate an agreement that would introduce competition for its own carriers. The UAE is a significant tourism destination for Israelis, and before the war, Israeli airlines operated popular routes there. The prolonged suspension is also creating operational and financial problems for the Israeli carriers. Airlines have had to adjust their aircraft deployment, reassign planes to other destinations and reconsider commercial commitments that had been made around the UAE routes. The uncertainty is particularly problematic ahead of the winter season. Airlines have already sold tickets and entered into commercial agreements based on the expectation that the routes would resume. If the restrictions continue, they will have to cancel flights and refund customers. The airlines are therefore seeking a clear framework that would allow them to resume flying under agreed security conditions, rather than an open-ended suspension.
