Wall Street fears AI agents will drain bank deposits, but analysts say risk is overdone

Wall Street fears AI agents could pull deposits from banks, but leading analysts and executives say the risk is overblown. Bank stocks have fallen since Meta Platforms launched its Muse personal agent on September 8: Bank of America is down 18%, Charles Schwab 14%, Wells Fargo 6%, and JPMorgan Chase 5%. Agents can compare yields and recommend options, which could erode the inertia that keeps customers' money in place. If deposits move, banks may have to pay more interest, squeezing profits. Analysts Mike Mayo and Gerard Cassidy say trust matters more to customers than slightly higher returns. A Deloitte survey found 72% of bank customers hesitate to share financial data with generative AI tools. Third-quarter earnings showed no clear shift in deposits.

Schwab CEO wants "rules of the road" for AI trading agents as Q3 revenue hits record $7.17B

Charles Schwab chief executive officer Rick Wurster says AI agents should only trade for clients who set clear rules. "Just handing the keys over... that's a leap too far. It is risky," he said on Yahoo Finance. He said users should give an agent their methodology and process, then oversee it. Schwab will soon launch Charley, an AI assistant that is not a trading bot. It will handle administrative tasks such as changing an address or naming a trusted contact. Schwab's third-quarter adjusted earnings rose 29% to $1.69 a share, beating expectations. Revenue climbed 17% to a record $7.17 billion, just shy of estimates. Core net new assets hit a record $190.4 billion, up 38%.
