Barstow college to transform Rite Aid store into job training site. Victorville Daily Press June 22, 2026, 2:30 a.m. PT * Barstow Community College has purchased a former Rite Aid building to create a new Career Technical Education Workforce Training Center. * The new facility will train residents for high-wage careers in fields like robotics, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing. Barstow Community College officials recently announced the purchase of a former Rite Aid building, with plans to transform the property into a new Career Technical Education Workforce Training Center. When completed, the former Rite Aid, at the corner of Barstow Road and E. Rimrock Road, will serve as a training hub preparing local residents for high-wage careers, college officials stated. The former Rite Aid building is located about a half mile north of Barstow College, which is located off Barstow Road. In 2025, the financially struggling Rite Aid drugstore chain continued sell or close its remaining stores across the country and High Desert, the Daily Press reported. Increased demand prompts expansion. The need to expand the college's current CTE Complex was identified through recent program growth and increased demand, college officials said. When the Rite Aid property became available, the college board recognized it as an extraordinary opportunity, as it offers significantly more space for future growth. It also allowed the college to "make thoughtful, responsible use of funds already set aside in our capital outlay fund, the college's long-term savings account for buildings and facilities," college officials said. Community investment. "This purchase represents exactly the kind of forward-thinking investment our community deserves," said Julie Hackbarth-McIntyre, the president of the Barstow Community College District Board of Trustees. "The Board of Trustees has been deliberate and disciplined in building the financial foundation to make this possible." Hackbarth-McIntyre added that the college is delivering more training capacity, more career pathways, and more economic opportunity for the people of Barstow, and at a cost that reflects the school's commitment to responsible stewardship of public funds. The new facility will house five hands-on Career Technical Education labs with capacity for up to 25 learners per lab, enabling hundreds of residents to train each year. Programs will cover in-demand skills such as industrial robotics, automation, cybersecurity, unmanned systems, and advanced manufacturing, with many roles requiring training that can be completed in as little as six to 12 months. Wages in these fields range from $23 to over $60 per hour, the college stated. New projects require more workers. The investment comes at a pivotal moment for the High Desert region as the massive BNSF Barstow International Gateway project is projected to generate up to 20,000 direct and indirect jobs over time. The BNSF project was approved by city leaders in June, according to the Daily Press. "Expanding defense technology operations at Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow and Fort Irwin are creating new demand for skilled workers in unmanned systems, cybersecurity, and industrial maintenance," college officials stated. Additionally, new clean energy investments across the North High Desert are adding further to the region's workforce needs. "For years, we have talked about preparing our community for the economic transformation coming to Barstow. That transformation is no longer on the horizon, it is here," Superintendent Eva Bagg said. "The people of Barstow deserve a facility dedicated to preparing them for the high-wage jobs arriving in our region and this investment delivers exactly that." The college is actively pursuing state and federal funding to support facility renovation and program launch.
Whole Foods Market has signed a lease for a former Rite Aid location in Brooklyn, marking a growing trend of grocery chains moving into spaces left vacant by the pharmacy retailer's bankruptcy. The 35,000-square-foot space at 182 Smith Street near Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill recently became available after Rite Aid's second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2025, which led to the closure of its 1,250 locations. Whilst many stores were sold to competitors like CVS and Walgreens, others became eyesores or attracted illegal activity. Grocers including Aldi, El Torito Supermarket, Bravo Supermarket and La Placita Market are also taking over former Rite Aid locations across the US. The trend highlights how retailers are capitalising on ready-made spaces in established shopping areas following Rite Aid's collapse.

Ross Dress for Less opening sixth Sonoma County store in Sonoma. Will be sixth outlet in the county. PUBLISHED: May 29, 2026 at 1:18 PM PDT UPDATED: May 29, 2026 at 1:45 PM PDT The rapidly expanding discount retailer Ross Dress for Less is preparing to open its sixth store in Sonoma County, in Sonoma's Maxwell Village. The company, known for its selection of discounted clothing and home goods, has for weeks been hiring to fill multiple positions to operate a retail store in the former site of a Rite-Aid store in Sonoma off Highway 12. Connie Kao, senior vice president of investor relations at the parent company Ross Stores Inc. said a lease has been signed at the location. The store will open July 18, she said. The retailer already operates stores in Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park and Petaluma. While the store does not currently appear on a map showing all current open store locations on the company's website, within the last month the company has posted multiple job openings listed for a Sonoma store at the building and on the job search websites Indeed and ZipRecruiter. The retailer is looking to hire for positions across the board, including retail associate, store manager and assistant store manager. The latter offers compensation of $21.81 to $26.42 per hour, while a store manager could earn $70,310 to $89,014 per year. The new store would open as the bargain chain, compared to some competitive retailers, looks to grow nationwide. The company is headquartered in Dublin with more than 1,900 stores open across 44 states and the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico. The company also operates 366 dd's Discounts stores in 23 states. Ross Stores Inc. in March announced its opening of 17 stores as it looks to expand with about 110 stores across the country, or a 5% growth. It is opening 13 Ross Dress for Less stores and four dd's Discounts stores across 11 states, marketing to shoppers who may be seeking out deals in reaction to inflation and higher prices on clothing and many household products. Richard Lietz, the company's executive vice president of property development, said in a statement to investors, "Following strong new store performance in 2025, these openings build on that momentum. We expanded Ross Dress for Less in the Mountain, Midwest, and Northeast regions while also strengthening our presence in key Sunbelt states." The company appears to position itself to grow as discount shopping grows in popularity among shoppers looking to cut costs this year. Leitz said in his statement, "Looking forward, we remain confident in our long-term growth potential and see a clear path to 2,900 Ross locations and 700 dd's Discounts stores across the country." Mark Bodenhamer, CEO of Sonoma Valley Chamber of Commerce, said the new retailer's opening will create new economic opportunities in the shopping center, which he says is "one of the biggest and most important in the city." He noted that while Sonoma has many local clothing store options, the addition of Ross will offer more economic options for clothing and various household items, while creating multiple new jobs at various levels of pay. He said it could draw new customers to the area as well. "I think it's a really good addition that will bring a lot to our community," Bodenhamer said. "It will bring a new group of shoppers to the community as well, from the neighborhoods and further out, so they don't come all the way to the plaza to do their shopping."
