About the job

Requirements
  • Hold a current Registered Nurse license issued by the state where services will be provided or a current multistate Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Alternatively, hold a current temporary or graduate Registered Nurse permit as required by the state board where services will be provided. Maryland requires documentation of recent graduation from a school of nursing and a permanent Registered Nurse license within 90 days of graduation; Ohio nurses must be currently licensed; Pennsylvania nurses must hold a current Registered Nurse Temporary Permit and obtain a permanent license before the temporary permit expires; West Virginia nurses must hold a current Registered Nurse Graduate Permit and obtain a permanent license before the temporary permit expires. Temporary permits are valid only in the state of issuance and are not multistate licenses.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Demonstrate novice-level knowledge and skills to provide care relevant to patients and apply growth and development principles across the lifespan.
  • Assess and interpret patient data to identify age-specific patient needs.
  • Meet the physical demands of heavy or hard work, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials and equipment weighing 40 pounds or more.
  • Follow safe patient-handling guidance, using lift equipment or other handling aids as indicated by the patient profile and applicable algorithms; manual patient handling should be limited to 35 pounds.
  • Work in an environment involving close work with others, protracted or irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, hands in water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide professional nursing care to patients in an inpatient hospital setting.
  • Assume responsibility, use appropriate authority, and accept accountability for delivery of patient care.
  • Provide direct patient care during an assigned shift according to the nursing process and scope of practice.
  • Make appropriate clinical decisions and use expert peers or management when applicable.
  • Initiate actions to correct, reduce, or prevent commonly occurring risks to patient health status.
  • Provide coordinated, comprehensive patient care—including assessment, expected outcomes, nursing interventions, and evaluation—through an interdisciplinary team approach.
  • Negotiate patient-care tasks with patients and families within safe-practice guidelines; delegate tasks to assigned personnel and follow up on task completion and patient response.
  • Use independent nursing judgment and remain accountable for care provided by oneself and by health care providers to whom care is delegated.
  • Apply standards, use resources effectively, and evaluate patient response in delivering care.
  • Use standards of care and practice to guide care delivery; base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, or research findings, and seek assistance or credible resources when safe independent performance is not possible.
  • Evaluate patient responses to performed and delegated tasks, including Patient Profile Assessment for safe patient handling and mobility.
  • Determine and revise direct and indirect care priorities based on patient acuity and available resources; update daily care plans to include applicable safe patient-handling algorithms.
  • Use established patient-care support systems, including documentation, communication, and information systems.
  • Support the development of others, engage in mentoring and networking to promote professional development, and help integrate staff and students into the health care team, including communicating the unit's mission, values, and vision.
  • Promote trusting relationships and open, honest communication at the unit level; exchange information relevant to patient assignments and interact with health care team members to meet patient-care needs.
  • Participate in performance-improvement activities as appropriate.
  • Complete annual education related to specialty accreditation requirements at applicable facilities, through computer-based learning, training, in-services, or competency validation.
