Requirements
- Perform waived, moderate, and high complexity laboratory testing under applicable CMS laboratory requirements.
- An Associate degree in clinical laboratory science, microbiology, chemistry, or biological science is required for the Medical Lab Technician path.
- A Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, microbiology, chemistry, or biological science is required for the Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 path.
- Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist certification from ASCP, AMT, HEW, or an equivalent certifying organization is required for the Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 path.
- Medical Laboratory Technician certification from ASCP or an equivalent certifying organization is required for the Medical Laboratory Technician path.
- New graduates must be eligible to sit for and pass the applicable certification boards within six months.
- Maintain appropriate clinical competencies for assigned departmental roles.
- Stay current with applicable state and federal regulations, statutes, company policies, laboratory protocols, standard operating procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.
- Complete required company and job-specific training within the specified time frame.
- Maintain required certifications and licenses before their expiration dates.
Responsibilities
- Perform waived, moderate, and high complexity testing using manual and automated processes according to policies and procedures.
- Prepare reagents, quality control materials, and other testing materials.
- Perform required equipment maintenance.
- Assist with data evaluation and correlation of new instruments and procedures.
- Manage open and expiration dates and storage of specimens, quality control materials, and reagents.
- Enter comments and use RBV for result reporting.
- Call critical values to appropriate personnel using the patient's full name, second identifier, test name, results, and the identity of the person receiving the results.
- Assess patient results using inquiry and print patient reports.
- Recognize computer problems, report them to information technology, and troubleshoot within capabilities.
- Document processes during downtimes.
- Print and review shift pending reports and note critical patients or patients with testing issues.
- Review and record quality control and troubleshooting steps for acceptability.
- Identify and resolve problems and take corrective action when evaluating testing procedures, patient results, and specimen integrity.
- Correctly identify specimens by matching the patient's name and medical record number.
- Review and record patient results for acceptability before verification.
- Assist the manager or director with writing and reviewing laboratory policies and procedures.
- Assist in training new personnel.
- Assist with preparing and maintaining facility accreditation readiness for CAP and DNV visits.
- Report safety-related incidents promptly through the Midas/RDE tool.
- Attend safety-related training programs, work safely, and monitor the work environment for safety issues.
- Complete mandatory safety and other required training modules within the specified time frame.
Desired Qualifications
- One year of experience is preferred for the Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist 1 role.
- Three years of experience in an acute care facility is preferred for the Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist 2 role.
- One year of experience is preferred for the Medical Laboratory Technician 1 role.
- One year of experience is preferred for the Medical Laboratory Technician 2 role.
