Basis Research Institute

View

Basis Research Institute is a New York–based nonprofit applied AI research organization focused on discovering the mathematical principles of intelligence and turning them into software. Its products are open-source tools, including the ChiRho language for causal reasoning, aimed at building a universal reasoning engine by combining ideas from programming languages, compilers, databases, and deep learning. It differentiates itself through a collaboration-driven, nonprofit model that targets societal problems and emphasizes open science, probabilistic programming, cognitive science, and computational neuroscience rather than profit-driven products. Its goal is to advance the mathematical understanding of intelligence and provide practical software that helps researchers and policymakers tackle real-world challenges, with projects funded by grants and collaborations including DARPA subrecipient work.

What believers are saying

  • Basis is actively hiring in 2026 across machine learning, compilers, robotics, and operations.
  • Founders Pledge and Survival and Flourishing Fund backed Basis, with $296,000 in 2024.
  • Recent work on Pact and MARA shows expanding technical scope and collaborator pull.

What critics are saying

  • Funding relies on grants; disclosed support includes $9.63 million, not recurring revenue.
  • Basis depends on DARPA subcontracting and donor-driven grants, creating renewal risk after 2026.
  • Open roles across research, robotics, and operations signal heavy burn and execution complexity.

What makes Basis Research Institute unique

  • Co-founder Eli Bingham co-created Pyro, giving Basis rare probabilistic programming credibility.
  • ChiRho remains Apache-2.0 open source, anchoring Basis in shared research infrastructure.
  • Basis spans compilers, program synthesis, robotics, and causal reasoning, unlike narrow lab peers.
