Standoff at Encore Boston: unions say they've met with Wynn just twice since strike began.

Standoff at Encore Boston: unions say they've met with Wynn just twice since strike began. Posted on: October 6, 2026, 09:50h. Last updated on: October 6, 2026, 11:13h. Key points. * More than 1,300 Encore Boston Harbor workers have been on strike since Sept. 4, * The unions say they've met face-to-face with Wynn officials only twice since the strike began * Wynn says most resort operations remain normal, though some guests report service disruptions More than 1,300 workers at Encore Boston Harbor walked off the job on Sept. 4 following a breakdown in contract negotiations with Wynn Resorts. Now more than a month into the strike, union leaders say they have met with the casino just twice. Teamsters Local 25 and UNITE HERE Local 26 represent housekeepers, servers, cooks, bartenders, slot attendants, and warehouse personnel at Encore Boston Harbor. The unions are pushing for a $10-per-hour wage increase spread over four years, a $25-per-hour starting minimum wage, and guarantees protecting existing healthcare and pension benefits. The collective bargaining agreements for the unions at Encore Boston Harbor expired Aug. 31. After Wynn was unwilling to meet the unions' demands, with the company saying Local 25 and 26 workers already average almost $96,000 a year in pay and benefits, the labor groups followed through on their strike threat. While both sides publicly maintain they are working toward a fair deal, a UNITE HERE Local 26 spokesperson told Casino.org on Tuesday, Oct. 6, that negotiators have met with Wynn management only twice since the walkout began - most recently on Sept. 30. Unions demand 'Boston standard' Union leaders contend that Wynn has consistently refused to match wage rates established at nearby unionized properties "Wynn has never offered a trade, a phase-in, or any new condition that would get workers there. It has simply said 'no.' Wynn says it wants an agreement that is 'fair, financially sustainable, and protects jobs for the long term.' The workers want the same thing. They believe the two sides can negotiate a contract that meets the Boston standard and that Wynn can sustain for years to come," the union statement continued. The unions emphasize that their wage demands reflect the rapidly rising cost of living across Greater Boston. In response, a spokesperson for Wynn Resorts told Casino.org that the company remains "committed to an agreement that recognizes the contributions of employees while protecting the thousands of jobs and economic benefits Encore Boston Harbor provides." "We are working toward a financially sound agreement that keeps Encore a strong employer and economic engine for Massachusetts for years to come," the Wynn spokesperson said. Resort status. Wynn officials say most resort operations inside Encore Boston Harbor are running as normal, despite the union strike. Recent guest reviews on platforms like Google reflect a mixed picture. While several recent visitors praised the property - with one reviewer noting that "even under strike, this place is immaculate, spotless, and service top-notch" - others reported noticeable disruptions. "Not worth a visit during the strike," wrote another guest. "Service is terrible, and restaurants and valet were closed. You can hear the drums from the picket line banging all night long." Despite the ongoing labor standoff and reduced amenities, room pricing remains high: midweek night stays at Encore Boston Harbor currently start at $527 before taxes and resort fees. Wynn says Iran war cost its UAE casino project only one day of construction.

Wynn says Iran war cost its UAE casino project only one day of construction. Crypto & Privacy Gambling Writer Wynn Resorts has set aside an extra $600 million for its Wynn Al Marjan Island casino resort in the United Arab Emirates to cover costs linked to the Iran war, PokerNews reported on Oct. 5. CEO Craig Billings said the conflict has delayed construction by a single day. Billings spoke at last week's Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. He appeared on a panel with Bill Hornbuckle of MGM International and Tom Reeg of Caesars Entertainment, who are also chief executives of their companies. The resort would be the first regulated casino in the Persian Gulf region. Extra money for shipping and supply costs. Billings said the added $600 million covers conflict-related expenses, including higher shipping and supply chain costs. PokerNews reported that the allocation brings the total project cost to about $5.7 billion. newsbetting.net carried the same account of Billings' remarks on lost construction time. Billings said the casino is still slated to open in 2027. One day lost after war began in February. The project hit a setback in February, when the United States and Israel went to war with Iran. Construction paused briefly. Wynn Resorts said at the time that it was monitoring the situation. Billings told the G2E audience that only one day of construction was missed. He said the emirates had done an outstanding job on security and that daily life in the UAE is completely normal. Earlier this year, concerns had centered on possible logistical and security hurdles from the fighting. Opening date and marina plans. Wynn Al Marjan Island is scheduled to open in September 2027. It had originally been slated to open in the first quarter of 2027. This month, the resort also released new renderings of a yacht marina set to open alongside it. PokerNews cited Super Yacht Times in reporting that the marina will be the first private harbour in the country where superyachts of that size can directly use a resort's services and amenities. Some have called the resort the Las Vegas of the Middle East. Crypto & Privacy Gambling Writer Backend developer by day, crypto casino tester by evenings and weekends. Massachusetts: workers at Encore Boston Harbor go on strike.

Massachusetts: workers at Encore Boston Harbor go on strike. Friday, September 4, 2026 9:49 AM Photo: Teamsters Local 25 photo Email, LinkedIn, and more More than 1,300 Encore Boston Harbor workers went on strike Friday after contract talks with casino owner Wynn Resorts broke down. The workers, part of labor Union United Here Local 26 and Teamsters Local 25, voted in August to authorize a strike. Their contract with Wynn Resorts expired on August 31 and a new contract has yet to be negotiated. According to the Teamsters Union, Encore management refused to come back to the bargaining table and offer any meaningful improvements, even after the strike-authorization vote. Encore's union workforce is seeking a contract with better wages, stronger benefits, and enhanced job protections. The resort near Boston took in an estimated $847 million in revenue last year, the unions said in a statement. "The unions have chosen to initiate a strike despite our continued efforts to reach an agreement through negotiations," the company said in a statement emailed to CDC Gaming. "We are committed to finding common ground that is fair, financially sustainable, and protects jobs for the long term," the company said. "Encore Boston Harbor remains open and operational, and we stand ready to service our guests while we continue negotiations." According to figures released by Encore, average compensation and benefits for union represented employees exceeds $95,000 per year. Over the past four years, union wages and benefits have increased 36.8%, while revenue has grown 1.9%. The casino says 86% of union employees are proud to work at Encore Boston Harbor, 83% plan to stay, and voluntary turnover is 3.9%. Last month, Wynn reported second-quarter operating revenue from Encore Boston Harbor of $209.3 million, down $6.4 million from $215.7 million for the second quarter of 2025. Table games win percentage for the second quarter was 18.1%, within the property's expected range of 18% to 22% and below the 21.3% experienced in the second quarter of 2025. Thomas Mari, president of Local 25, criticized Encore management for slow-walking negotiations, while playing games with union members. "Now they're going to see how big of a mistake that was," Mari said. "When a company refuses to respect the workers who make its profits possible, we shut it down." The workers on strike include 211 Teamsters who work in the warehouse, horticulture, call center, cage cashiers, limo drivers, dispatchers, traffic attendants, valet, and guest experience attendants. "We didn't want to strike, but we won't accept a contract that blatantly disrespects our labor," James Atkins, lead gardener and chief steward at Local 25, said in a statement. "We're on the picket line and will stay out as long as it takes to get a fair deal."
