Requirements
  • Successful completion of The Association of Ontario Locksmiths programs 1 and 2, including 8,000 hours of apprenticeship.
  • Successful completion of Locksmith 259L Certification.
  • A valid Ontario driver's license is preferred.
  • Ability to perform lock opening and bypass procedures.
  • Proficient experience with master key systems, including ASSA, BEST, and Sargent.
  • Manual dexterity and the ability to perform fine work on complex devices.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, manufacturers' schematics, and parts drawings.
  • Proficient computer and keyboarding skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Advanced experience using locksmith specialty tools and equipment, automated and manual system key-cutting machines, and related automated software.
  • Ability to install and service high-security lock systems and to recombine and re-key locks.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple and changing demands requiring attention to detail.
  • Ability to complete work accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to accomplish small projects from initial layout through completion while meeting target deadlines.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team under minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to patient- and family-centred care principles.

Responsibilities
  • Install, repair, rebuild, and replace locks and cylinders, including cylindrical, unit, mortise, and rim locks, and reload cylinders.
  • Cut new or replacement keys for authorized personnel using Key Request forms.
  • Repair locks on desks, file cabinets, display cases, and similar containers.
  • Pick locks for which keys have been lost.
  • Repair or replace door-closure panic hardware and accessibility openers.
  • Perform emergency lock repairs as required.
  • Maintain master key systems by recording hardware changes and new lock installations and by repairing, maintaining, and reloading master-system cylinders.
  • Determine locking-device and locking-system requirements for renovations and new facilities from blueprints, schematics, or sketches.
  • Recommend locking systems based on available products.
  • Install or monitor installation of locking devices and systems in renovated or newly constructed facilities.
  • Conduct door-hardware evaluations and inspections at new and existing facilities and sites.
  • Work with outside contractors to install electronic access equipment and locking door hardware, including magnetic locks and electric strikes.
  • Determine applicable hardware specifications by interpreting hardware schedules, blueprints, plans, sketches, and work orders.
  • Maintain inventory of locksmith supplies and equipment, prepare replacement-item requisitions, and store supplies and equipment securely.
  • Maintain coded padlock logs and records of key numbers and associated locks for all SHN locations.
  • Change lock combinations annually where applicable.
  • Maintain control of High Security ASSA, Sargent, and BEST/Stanley master key systems.
  • Inspect sites when notified of lock problems.
  • Assist in developing departmental security policies, standards, and guidelines.
  • Design and cut unique keys by reviewing numbered keys issued to formulate new combinations.
  • Recommend and implement physical-security safeguards, services, and access-control measures for departmental assets and information.
  • Work at all SHN sites as required.
  • Work assigned shifts and participate in on-call coverage.
  • Work daily with Security and Facilities staff to complete urgent repairs in a timely manner.
  • Perform other assigned security and locksmith duties.
