About the company

Moderna develops medicines built on messenger RNA (mRNA). Its products use mRNA delivered into cells to instruct them to produce specific proteins that can prevent or treat disease, with vaccines being a primary example. In practice, a dose delivers engineered mRNA into the body, cells translate it into a target protein, and the immune system responds or the protein modulates biology to combat disease. Moderna differentiates itself through its focus on building a whole mRNA medicines platform and in-house capabilities for designing, manufacturing, and scaling mRNA therapies, including rapid development and large-scale production. Its goal is to create a new category of medicines based on mRNA that can improve how diseases are discovered, developed, and treated, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Moderna sinks 18% after leak of melanoma vaccine data showing 42% lower recurrence risk

Moderna shares fell 18% after detailed Phase 3 results for its personalised melanoma vaccine, developed with Merck, appeared online two days before their scheduled presentation. The data surfaced on medical news site Oncology Central and was taken down shortly afterwards. Trading in Moderna was halted for volatility. The leaked data still looks positive. Adding the vaccine, intismeran autogene, to Merck's Keytruda cut the risk of recurrence or death by 42% versus Keytruda alone. After two years, 82.2% of patients on the combination were alive and cancer-free, against 70% on Keytruda alone. The trial enrolled 1,137 patients. The stock had risen more than eightfold this year, and traded at about 52x forward sales before the drop. The 42% figure also trails the 49% from the smaller Phase 2b trial. Full results are due at the ESMO Congress on Saturday.

Moderna soars 600% to $90B market cap, but valuation leaves no margin for error

Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA) has soared over 600% this year, making it the best performer among large-cap healthcare stocks. Eli Lilly gained 16% and Johnson & Johnson 22%. The rally followed US approval of mFLUSIVA, an influenza vaccine for people aged 50 and older. Moderna also said its personalised cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, significantly improved recurrence-free survival in certain melanoma patients when combined with Merck's Keytruda. It is the first personalised vaccine to produce positive Phase 3 results. Moderna's market cap now stands at $90 billion. The average analyst price target of $123.61 implies a downside of about 45%. In the first six months of 2026, revenue rose 113.6% to $534 million, but net loss widened to $2.1 billion from $1.8 billion.

Healthcare stocks have gained 25.2% over the past six months, beating the S&P 500 by 16.3 percentage points. Earnings per share dropped 24.5% annually, and the stock trades at 46x forward price-to-sales. Chemed, worth $6.67 billion, grew revenue 4.1% a year over five years, slower than its peers.
