Jad Ellawn, Brookfield's Managing Partner and Regional Head of the Middle East, said Qatar had emerged as a significant global investment hub, highlighting the company's established partnerships with leading institutions, including QIA. Tlaib, PESP seek answers as Canadian investment giant becomes Michigan's third-largest landlord.

Tlaib, PESP seek answers as Canadian investment giant becomes Michigan's third-largest landlord. Lawmakers raise concerns about Brookfield's acquisition of YES! Communities, citing rent increases, excessive fees, and neglected maintenance Brookfield has an opportunity to change these practices, but residents deserve more than promises." - Jordan Ash, housing director, PESP DETROIT, MI, UNITED STATES, October 20, 2026 / EINPresswire.com / - Members of Congress are demanding answers from Canadian private equity giant Brookfield Asset Management following its acquisition of YES! Communities, a deal that made Brookfield Michigan's third-largest landlord virtually overnight. In an October 13 letter, Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Maxwell Frost (D-FL), and Gabe Vasquez (D-NM) called on Brookfield to address concerns about its treatment of manufactured housing residents. The acquisition, valued at approximately $10 billion, added more than 21,000 Michigan home sites to Brookfield's portfolio according to data from Co-star and gave the firm control of one of the country's largest manufactured housing operators. "Given the challenges our constituents have experienced at Yes! properties, as well as broader concerns about the private equity business model, we seek assurances that Brookfield will prioritize improving residents' quality of life and protecting their economic and housing stability, rather than exacerbating the economic challenges they already face," the lawmakers wrote. The letter cites reports of exorbitant rent increases, excessive fees, neglected maintenance, and threats of eviction for residents who installed window air conditioning units. Lawmakers requested written answers by November 20 on whether Brookfield will limit rent increases, restrict fees, protect residents from retaliation, and change its eviction practices. Michigan residents have already raised concerns about conditions at YES! properties. Karen Anderson, a homeowner at Avon on the Lake in Rochester Hills, told Pennsylvania pension officials in August that her lot rent had increased nearly one-third since 2021. She described additional fees, restrictions on window A/C units, and difficulty selling her home despite investing more than $12,000 in improvements. Other YES! residents in Saginaw and Mason have reported repeated rent increases, deteriorating maintenance, and water quality problems. "Brookfield became one of Michigan's largest landlords through a single acquisition, and thousands of residents are now left wondering what that means for their homes," said Jordan Ash, Housing Director at the Private Equity Stakeholder Project (PESP). "The warning signs are already there. Brookfield has faced tenant pushback over housing conditions and displacement concerns in the United States and abroad, while YES! residents in Michigan have been dealing with rising rents, excessive fees, and neglected maintenance. Brookfield has an opportunity to change these practices, but residents deserve more than promises. They need clear commitments that their housing will remain affordable and safe." Brookfield has faced tenant organizing at its apartment properties in Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. In Madrid, tenants have protested reported plans to sell apartments individually following Brookfield's acquisition of approximately 5,000 apartments previously owned by Blackstone, raising concerns about displacement. PESP, MHAction, and YES! residents previously wrote to Brookfield requesting a meeting and commitments to limit rent increases, prevent retaliation, and address resident concerns. The October 13 congressional letter renews those demands and asks Brookfield to cooperate with residents. Developer Stockland latest to embrace data centres.

Developer Stockland latest to embrace data centres. Derek RoseAAP 18 October 2026, 10:50pm One of Australia's biggest property developers is moving forward with its plan to build data centres, with a pipeline of seven sites that it stresses are far from residential neighbourhoods. Stockland already has one data centre operating in the Sydney high-tech industrial suburb of Macquarie Park and in March formed a joint venture with global data centre provider EdgeConneX. Departing chairman Tom Pockett told the Stockland's annual general meeting on Monday that the strategy was in an "embryonic form" but had been very well thought out. The company is currently working on planning approvals and securing power for the sites before making major investments in the partnership, chief executive Tarun Gupta told the meeting. Stockland has already secured 450 megawatts of power for three sites: an expansion of its Macquarie Park data centre and at two current logistics warehouses in Melbourne's industrial suburbs of Cherry Lane and Brooklyn. The four other data centre sites in Stockland's pipeline are less developed. One is also in Macquarie Park, two are in the western Sydney suburbs of Wetherill Park and Kemps Creek and one is proposed for Melbourne Business Park. "They're all located in logistics sites, so that helps the fact that there's no communities around them," Mr Pockett said. The sites are already zoned for data centre uses and Stockland is now working through community and statutory consultation, Mr Gupta said. "The sites we picked are the ones where we think the right balance of providing what is a critical infrastructure for the country, but also balancing community requirements," he said. The noise from the heavy-duty cooling equipment used to prevent data centre server racks from overheating has prompted a backlash in some areas. Another data centre developer, ASX-listed NextDC, warned on Monday that its flagship M3 Melbourne data centre faced a delay in securing power and it was still working on assessing the implications. Electrical distributor Jemena in September paused a rollout of the mammoth five-storey concrete poles needed to power the site, amid protests from residents in the Melbourne suburb of Yarraville. Firmus Technologies, which withdrew plans for an ASX listing earlier this month, is also facing community opposition in Tasmania over its plans for data centres there. Mr Gupta said that Stockland had a 70-year track record of engaging with communities, such as when it creates new big master-planned communities. "That same approach is what we bring into our data centre consultation," he said. EdgeConneX operates 80 data centres in 20 different countries, and has a pipeline of close to nine gigawatts in development. Backed by Swedish investment management giant EQT Infrastructure, EdgeConneX recently appointed former Telstra and Brookfield executive Chris Maher as its Australian chief executive. Stockland shares finished Monday down 4.4 per cent to $4.04.
