Requirements
  • A minimum of five years of management experience in a law enforcement or similar security setting.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record subject to continuous third-party monitoring.
  • Must complete all Vanderbilt University Public Safety training requirements within 30 days of hire, including de-escalation, Pressure Point Control Tactics, pepper spray training or equivalent, CPR and AED certification, Community Service Officer training, and knowledge of university and police department directives, rules, and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, guide, and develop staff for increased responsibility.
  • Proven ability to lead independently with limited direction across a wide range of assignments.
  • Expertise in performance management, including evaluations, feedback, and handling disciplinary and performance issues.
  • Ability to make timely, sound, fact-based decisions and accept responsibility for outcomes.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and professionalism when interacting with diverse internal and external contacts.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain working relationships with public officials, enforcement personnel, and university and medical center constituents.
  • Must remain calm, objective, and self-restrained in stressful, unpleasant, or changing situations.

  • Must be able to stand for long periods, walk, climb, and lift, and meet departmental appearance and grooming standards.
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation and drug test, demonstrate good moral character and a good driving record, and have no prior criminal convictions that would prohibit certification under the Tennessee Private Protective Services Act.
  • Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays and work in inclement weather and various weather extremes.
  • Must be able to use necessary precautionary equipment and work around hazardous materials, infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, loud noises, and potential physical danger from violent individuals.
  • Must obtain required immunizations and medical tests to work in patient care and high-risk areas.
Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic and tactical leadership for a designated security unit or shift, optimizing staffing, resource allocation, and performance outcomes.
  • Develop, maintain, and adjust shift schedules to ensure continuous and efficient coverage.
  • Lead routine audits and inspections of personnel, equipment, and processes to ensure compliance with departmental standards.
  • Review and authorize supervisory reports and documentation for completeness and adherence to required standards.
  • Maintain operational records and data and conduct research to prepare strategic proposals and contingency plans.
  • Serve as operational backup for shift supervisors during critical staffing needs or emergencies.
  • Oversee training and professional development for direct reports, including Weapons Detection Specialists and Community Service Officers, with field and classroom instruction on weapons detection systems and related equipment.
  • Validate and approve time sheets and payroll submissions.
  • Review and approve time-off requests, manage leave of absence processes, and ensure compliance with organizational policies.
  • Serve as the delegate for payroll and time approval when the shift supervisor is absent.
  • Lead the performance management process, conduct formal performance evaluations, facilitate performance management conversations, and provide feedback to direct reports.
  • Coach and mentor staff and lead corrective action and counseling sessions, including preliminary investigations into employee misconduct and recommendations for disciplinary actions.
  • Participate in recruitment and selection for new hires, including conducting interviews and providing hiring recommendations.
  • Ensure timely and effective emergency response for fire, medical, and other incidents.
  • Supervise building security checks, directed patrols, and bi-weekly emergency phone testing.
  • Manage and coordinate vehicle access services, motorist assistance, and security or personal safety escort requests.
  • Oversee secure transport services for psychiatric patients in collaboration with medical personnel and in compliance with safety protocols.
  • Implement accountability frameworks for equitable and consistent service delivery across the unit.
  • Maintain relationships with the university, medical center, and surrounding community; lead proactive patrol initiatives and collaborative security-risk mitigation.
  • Represent the department in cross-functional meetings and compile and present data for compliance and strategic planning.
  • Coordinate physical security and crime prevention strategies with Community Relations personnel.
  • Manage security operations for athletic competitions, commencement ceremonies, concerts, dignitary visits, and other high-profile special events, including crowd control and orderly conduct.
  • Keep departmental leadership informed of significant security incidents and trends and lead management meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • A bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Business Management, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of standard computer programs, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
