Apple debuts sleep apnoea notifications for Apple Watch, Hearing Test feature for AirPods Pro users in India.

Apple debuts sleep apnoea notifications for Apple Watch, Hearing Test feature for AirPods Pro users in India. Apple announced the launch of sleep apnoea notifications for Apple Watch and Hearing test feature for AirPods Pro users in India. 22 May 2026 Apple has announced the launch of sleep apnoea notifications for Apple Watch users and the Hearing Test feature for AirPods Pro users in India. "AirPods Pro 3 provide a clinically validated Hearing Test feature for users to test their hearing levels in the comfort of their own home," said Apple. Sleep apnoea notifications for Apple Watch in India. Sleep apnoea is a prevalent disorder in which breathing momentarily stops during sleep, preventing the body from getting enough oxygen. Breathing Disturbances is a new Apple Watch metric that uses the Accelerometer to detect small movements at the wrist associated with interruptions to normal respiratory patterns during sleep. Every 30 days, Apple Watch will analyse breathing disturbance data and notify users if it shows consistent signs of moderate to severe sleep apnoea so they can speak to their doctor about next steps, including potential diagnosis and treatment. For more informed conversations with their healthcare providers, users can export a PDF that shows when sleep apnoea may have occurred, three months of breathing disturbance data, and additional information. Apple notes that Breathing Disturbances can also be used to assess restfulness of sleep. Breathing Disturbances can be influenced by alcohol, medications, sleep position, and more. Users can view their nightly Breathing Disturbances in the Health app, where they are classified as elevated or not elevated, and can be viewed over a one-month, six-month, or one-year period. Hearing Test feature for AirPods Pro. To give users even more insights into hearing health, Apple says it is "introducing an intuitive, clinical-grade hearing test based on the standard clinical approach called pure-tone audiometry that users can take themselves with their AirPods Pro and a compatible iPhone or iPad." Users can take the convenient test in about five minutes from the comfort of their own home. The Hearing Test feature leverages advanced acoustic science and provides users with an interactive experience. When a user completes the test, they will see an easy-to-understand summary of their results, including a number representing hearing loss in each ear, a classification, and recommendations. The results, which include an audiogram, are stored privately and securely in the Health app, and can be shared with a healthcare provider to have more informed conversations. The Hearing Test feature is supported on AirPods Pro 2 and later with the latest firmware paired with a compatible iPhone or iPad with iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 and later, and is intended for people 18 years or older. The UI everyone loves to hate just won a Gold medal.

The UI everyone loves to hate just won a Gold medal. Apple's controversial "Liquid Glass" design takes top honors at the 105th ADC Awards Toggle Dark Mode Discover more Cell Phones Mobile app development Apple's new Liquid Glass design may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's clearly turning heads in some corners of the design community - and in a good way. This week, Apple took home four prestigious awards from the Art Directors Club (ADC) for the new UI design, including a Gold Cube - the second-highest honor bestowed by the organization. It's worth noting that the ADC Awards specifically listed "iOS 26 Liquid Glass," which means they were focusing on the iPhone design rather than the iPad or the Mac. That will likely make sense to many Mac users, who have found the translation of the Liquid Glass UI to macOS 26 Tahoe less than ideal. Liquid Glass feels very much at home on iOS, and while it takes some getting used to, it's not really a jarring experience. In fact, most of the people I've spoken to who were nervous about updating to iOS 26 because of Liquid Glass found their opinions ranged from neutral to positive after a few weeks of actually using it. While that's not universally true, it's fair to say that for many, it's the change away from a familiar design and adjustment to a new one that's the real issue. Discover more Apple device repair Apple accessory store Apple TV content Either way, the ADC Awards prove that "actual designers like it," as Bloomberg's Mark Gurman points out. The Gold Cube for iOS 26 Liquid Glass was awarded in the "Interactive / UX / UI" category, while Apple won a Silver Cube for "Experiential Deign / Digital Experiences" and two Bronze Cubes for "Experiential Design / Consumer Experience" and "Innovation." The four awards together placed Liquid Glass at #27 among the "Most Awarded Work Rankings." Liquid Glass wasn't the only area in which Apple took home some ADC Awards. It also won two Gold Cubes for last fall's Apple TV rebranding - one for the cinematography and one for the animated logo - as well as a Direction Gold Cube for its "Someday" ad and two more Gold Cubes for "I'm Not Remarkable" - one for Music and Use of Sound and another for Online Video. The Gold Cube is one of the most prestigious awards the ADC hands out, but Apple has also previously taken home two Black Cubes - ADC's Best of Show award that's only given to one recipient each year. These were for the "Bounce" AirPods ad in 2020 and "Barbers" in 2018, an ad that showed off Portrait Mode on the iPhone 8. Apple has also won numerous other Gold Cube awards over the years, but like its two Black Cube awards, these are much more frequently awarded for its ad campaigns. For example, it won five Gold Cubes in 2019, all of which were for its "Welcome Home" ad designed to show off the HomePod's immersive listening experience. While few outside of the art and design industry have heard of it, the ADC Awards were founded by the Art Directors Club in 1921, which means they're now on their 105th year and are actually the longest continuously running industry award show in any discipline. While many of the awards focus on advertising, digital media, and photography, they actually run the entire gamut of art and design, from magazines and newspapers to logos, packaging and product design, photography, gaming, and experiential design, as this week's Liquid Glass awards show.

Apple acquires German color management firm Patchflyer for Final Cut Pro integration

Apple has acquired Patchflyer, a German firm specialising in colour management and digital imaging, according to European Union listings. The company, run by sole employee Jonathan Marvin Ochmann, develops proprietary tools for colour science, spatial measurements and acoustic modelling. Patchflyer's main product, Color.io, is a web-based application for colour management and grading of digital imaging. The acquisition, which took place last October, could see the technology integrated into Apple products such as Final Cut Pro or Pixelmator Pro. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Patchflyer's website describes the firm as a specialist in developing tools and script libraries that offer unique approaches to complex virtual instruments.
