Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required; technical or vocational training, apprenticeship, or military experience in industrial maintenance, power plant operations, stationary engineering, or mechanical trades is preferred. An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field is a plus.
  • At least five to seven years of hands-on maintenance-technician experience in central utility plants, power generation or cogeneration facilities, large industrial boiler or chiller plants, or pharmaceutical or biotech utility operations is required, with advanced expertise demonstrated through progressively responsible roles.
  • Extensive experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing high-pressure boilers, steam turbines and auxiliaries, electric and absorption chillers, high-pressure centrifugal boiler feedwater pumps, cooling towers, air and gas compressors, heat exchangers, steam traps, centrifugal and positive-displacement pumps, vacuum pumps, control valves, pneumatic systems, and associated piping and support equipment is required.
  • Proficiency in predictive and condition-based maintenance methods and tools, including vibration analysis, thermography, ultrasound, and oil analysis, and the ability to interpret results and recommend actions is required.
  • Strong mechanical skills in hydraulics, pneumatics, precision alignment, bearing and seal replacement, and basic electrical troubleshooting of motors, starters, variable-frequency drives, and motor control centers are required.
  • Experience using computerized maintenance management systems for work-order management, asset-data integrity, and reporting is required. The ability to read and interpret P&IDs, mechanical drawings, schematics, and original equipment manufacturer technical manuals is required.
  • Verbal and written communication skills sufficient to interface professionally with technicians, engineers, management, vendors, and client stakeholders are required.
  • The ability to work safely and independently with attention to detail in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment while meeting compliance, quality, and schedule requirements is required.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability and willingness to work overtime, weekends, and holidays and participate in on-call rotations for 24/7 utility operations are required.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent-resident status is required, along with the ability to obtain and maintain site-specific access authorization, including comprehensive background checks and drug screening.
  • The ability to pass a medical evaluation for respirator use and complete quantitative fit testing for required respirator types is required.
  • A Connecticut S-1 or S-2 Heating, Piping, and Cooling license, or an equivalent stationary engineer or high-pressure boiler operator credential recognized in Connecticut, is required.
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification is required, or must be obtained within 60 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex industrial mechanical systems, including high-pressure firetube and watertube boilers, steam and gas turbines with auxiliaries, large electric and absorption chillers, high-pressure centrifugal boiler feedwater pumps, condensate and vacuum pumps, control valves and actuators, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and related utility-plant equipment.
  • Execute predictive maintenance using vibration-data collection and analysis, infrared thermography for mechanical and electrical hotspots and refractory assessment, ultrasonic testing for steam traps, leaks, and thickness, oil-sample analysis, borescope inspections, and laser alignment of rotating equipment.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, including lubrication, filter and strainer changes, bearing and seal replacements, packing and gasket work, belt and chain adjustments, precision alignment, cleaning heat-transfer surfaces, and functional testing of controls and safety devices.
  • Maintain cooling-tower systems, including fan-drive gearboxes, couplings, blade pitch and balance, fill media and drift eliminators, basin sediment, distribution nozzles, makeup-water controls, and vibration monitoring.
  • Service high-pressure steam systems through boiler tune-ups and combustion analysis, steam-trap testing and repair or replacement, condensate-return system maintenance, deaerator maintenance, and support for annual boiler inspections and insurance surveys.
  • Maintain feedwater and pumping systems, including high-pressure centrifugal-pump overhauls, laser alignment, suction and discharge valve work, and coordination of chemical-treatment interfaces.
  • Maintain compressed-air and gas systems, including reciprocating, rotary-screw, and centrifugal compressors; intercoolers and aftercoolers; moisture separators; desiccant and refrigerated dryers; filter banks; pressure regulation; and ultrasonic leak detection and repair.
  • Support heat-exchanger maintenance through shell-and-tube cleaning, tube-bundle inspection and replacement support, gasket and bolting work, and performance monitoring through approach-temperature trends.
  • Conduct or assist with welding, pipefitting, fabrication, rigging, and heavy-equipment handling for repairs, modifications, and equipment change-outs when qualified and authorized.
  • Respond to emergency and urgent work orders with rapid diagnostics and repairs to minimize utility downtime affecting manufacturing operations, and provide timely status updates and estimated times of arrival to stakeholders.
  • Ensure maintenance complies with applicable codes, including ASME, NFPA, and OSHA; regulations, including EPA and Connecticut DEEP; cGMP requirements; and site standards. Maintain complete and accurate documentation for internal audits, regulatory inspections, and client reviews.
  • Develop and follow detailed Job Hazard Analyses, perform Lockout/Tagout for electrical, mechanical, thermal, pneumatic, and hydraulic energy sources, use required personal protective equipment, and participate in confined-space entry, hot-work, and fall-protection programs.
  • Identify, report, and correct safety or reliability issues proactively, and independently assess equipment condition to prevent failures that could affect personnel safety, environmental compliance, or production continuity.
  • Create, update, and close computerized maintenance management system work orders with detailed findings, parts consumed, labor hours, failure codes, and corrective actions; support reporting of preventive-maintenance compliance, backlog, mean time to repair, mean time between failures, and work-order aging.
  • Support environmental programs through proper refrigerant handling, chemical management, wastewater-system coordination, and emissions-related maintenance.
  • Analyze equipment-performance trends and recommend improvements to maintenance strategies, preventive-maintenance frequencies, spare-parts strategies, and equipment upgrades to improve reliability, reduce costs, and increase energy efficiency.
  • Lead or participate in root-cause-analysis investigations using structured methods such as 5-Why and fishbone analysis, and develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to eliminate recurring issues.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, environmental health and safety, vendors, and capital-project teams on equipment upgrades, new installations, commissioning, and major outage or turnaround planning and execution.
  • Mentor junior technicians and operators, and contribute to developing and refining standard operating procedures, maintenance procedures, training materials, and knowledge-transfer initiatives.
  • Communicate proactively with manufacturing and research stakeholders, clearly explain issues and resolutions, and support them with a solutions-oriented approach.
  • Work collaboratively and professionally with teammates and clients, respect employee authenticity and cultural differences, balance multiple tasks and priorities with attention to detail, adapt to shifting priorities, take ownership of issues within scope, and escalate appropriately.

Desired Qualifications

  • Additional advanced boiler-operator or stationary-engineer licenses beyond the minimum requirements.
  • AWS Certified Welder certification or equivalent qualifications in SMAW, GTAW, or pipe-welding procedures suitable for pressure-piping repairs.
  • Industry certifications such as Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician, Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional, ISO 18436 Vibration Analyst Category I or higher, or ASNT Infrared Thermographer.
  • Direct experience in FDA-regulated pharmaceutical, biotech, or cGMP manufacturing environments, including familiarity with change control, deviation reporting, and validated-system considerations.
  • Experience with gas turbines, combined heat and power or cogeneration systems, or waste-heat recovery.
  • Experience facilitating root-cause analysis and implementing reliability-centered maintenance or predictive-maintenance program improvements.
  • Pipefitting, millwright, or boilermaker trade background with rigging and heavy-lift experience.
  • Familiarity with Process Safety Management principles, especially as applied to high-pressure steam or chemical systems.
