Requirements
  • Strong proficiency in Python and PyTorch or an equivalent deep learning framework, with experience in large-scale codebases, data tooling, and visualization.
  • Demonstrated experience in at least one of the four AI pillars: model and data, data infrastructure, machine-learning infrastructure, or evaluation protocols.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
  • A track record of impact through published research, production deployment in modern AI systems, or infrastructure that measurably accelerated a team's work.
Responsibilities
  • Advance robot capabilities through research, scaling data pipelines, optimizing training and inference throughput, or building evaluations that make laboratory results predictive of field performance.
  • Build large multimodal generative world models that learn from robot experience, including model architecture, tokenization, large-scale training, and data processing.
  • Design and operate data infrastructure for visual and robot data, including web-scale media, egocentric data, synthetic data, and on-policy robot data, with annotation and curation at scale.
  • Own distributed training and inference systems that keep GPUs fully utilized, increase training throughput, and accelerate inference.
  • Build evaluation infrastructure connecting pre-training metrics to real-world robot performance, including benchmarks, evaluation frameworks, model-ranking systems, and supporting tooling.
  • Build infrastructure that increases research velocity through faster pipelines, more predictive evaluations, more efficient training systems, and tooling that eliminates manual work.
  • Ship research to production by owning the path from experimental results to deployed capabilities on robot hardware and measuring impact through robot performance.
  • Contribute to a learning flywheel in which robot experience improves models, improved models enable more capable robots, and more capable robots generate richer experience.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduate-level education or equivalent research experience in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Experience with distributed training frameworks such as TorchTitan, DeepSpeed, and Fully Sharded Data Parallelism/ZeRO, and/or large-scale data processing pipelines and extract, transform, load systems spanning on-device, on-premises, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience with multimodal generative models, world models, diffusion models, or autoregressive architectures.
  • Experience with inference optimization techniques, including quantization such as post-training quantization, quantization-aware training, INT8, or FP8; CUDA or Triton kernel development; or serving systems such as TensorRT or equivalent.

Robotics company 1X has launched preorders for Neo, billed as the world's first consumer-ready humanoid robot, priced at $20,000 or $499 monthly for a six-month commitment. The 5-foot-6-inch robot can perform household tasks like unloading dishwashers and watering plants, and features a built-in large language model. Neo has a soft body, moves slowly, carries up to 55 pounds, and runs for four hours per charge. However, the robot occasionally falls over and requires significant human assistance. Complex tasks require remote operation by 1X employees wearing VR headsets. OpenAI-backed 1X releases world model to power humanoid robots

Norwegian humanoid robot company 1X, backed by OpenAI, has released a new world model called 1X World Model (1XWM) designed to enhance robots' understanding and reasoning in the physical world. The model generates future videos from text and initial images during inference, then infers robot actions from these predictions. Trained on web videos and limited robot data, 1XWM targets 1X's Neo humanoid robot, currently in mass production for home use. Neo can generate predictive videos and reason about household tasks. However, the company noted the current model requires a dual modelling process for video and action generation and has not yet achieved true zero-shot execution. The development aims to give robots general behavioural capabilities for domestic scenarios.
