Position Description

The McGill University Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as a Clinician-Teacher at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice in the Department of Medicine and the Respiratory Division at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This is a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

Job Duties

As a Clinician-Teacher, the successful candidate’s major non-clinical focus will be on teaching the next generation of physicians. Teaching activity will include both didactic and clinical teaching.

The position is for a Clinician-Teacher with a focus on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary rehabilitation, and Quality Improvement (QI). Clinical responsibilities will include providing specialized care for patients with COPD through the outpatient subspecialty COPD clinic and pulmonary rehabilitation program; participating in the COPD specialized consultation service; and contributing to inpatient and outpatient respirology services across MUHC sites (the Montreal Chest Institute/Royal Victoria Hospital (Glen), the Montreal General Hospital, and the Lachine Hospital) as part of the Division’s clinical service responsibilities.

The incumbent will work closely with an interdisciplinary COPD team comprising a nurse practitioner, COPD nurse educators, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care. Responsibilities will also include contributing to the supervision of fellows in the Clinical Fellowship in Chronic Respiratory Disease and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, advancing and expanding pulmonary rehabilitation outreach initiatives to satellite centres within the MUHC network, with particular attention to Indigenous communities in Northern Quebec, and assuming leadership responsibilities as opportunities arise, including the potential appointment as Medical Lead of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching of clinical and research trainees at undergraduate and graduate levels, and to continuing medical education. While it is not expected that the candidate obtain independent research funding, it is expected that they support research activities being conducted by Respiratory Division members.

The incumbent will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

• Hold an MD degree and have completed subspecialty in Respirology;

• Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) in Respirology;

• Be eligible for licensure in Quebec and hold certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec;

• Have completed formal fellowship training in COPD management and pulmonary rehabilitation. Previous involvement in pulmonary rehabilitation programs is preferred but not mandatory;

• Have or obtain shortly after appointment, training and/or experience in, Quality Improvement (QI) including knowledge of QI methodologies (e.g., identifying problems, implementing change, measuring outcomes, and sustaining improvements);

• Have the ability to lead clinical healthcare improvement initiatives in chronic respiratory disease and pulmonary rehabilitation;

• Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.

The start date is flexible and may be adjusted to accommodate the successful candidate’s training requirements.
