Q3 earnings call US consumers "resilient", but Whirlpool shows strain as sales fall 8%

Early third-quarter earnings suggest US consumers are still spending, though not every company is benefiting. "Resilient" was the word many executives used this week, despite inflation, high interest rates and tension between the US and Iran. Royal Caribbean beat earnings expectations, with guests served up 9% to 2.7 million. Its shares rose over 8% on Tuesday. UPS beat expectations on earnings and revenue, with US revenue up 4.5% to $14.86 billion, and raised its full-year revenue forecast to about $92.6 billion from $91.2 billion. Coca-Cola beat expectations and lifted its full-year earnings growth forecast to at least 11%. Sherwin-Williams' net sales rose 7.9%, but it expects muted demand into 2027. Whirlpool missed on both revenue and earnings, and its North America net sales fell more than 8%.

UPS stock is down 57% from its peak, yielding 6.5% ahead of its October 27 results

UPS shares trade around $100, about 57% below their record close of $232.11 on February 2, 2022. The fall has lifted the dividend yield to about 6.5%, based on a $1.64 quarterly payout. The parcel giant reports third-quarter results before the market opens on October 27. It is the first full quarter after UPS finished cutting volume for its biggest customer, Amazon. Most of the drop reflects lower profit. Adjusted earnings per share were $12.94 in 2022; management expects about $7.22 for 2026. Second-quarter US domestic adjusted operating margin rose to 8% from 7% a year earlier. UPS expects about $3 billion in cost savings this year and $5.5 billion in free cash flow, against about $5.4 billion in dividends. Shares trade at about 13 times expected 2027 earnings, against about 19 for the S&P 500.

Cash-rich stocks: Clean Harbors worth watching, UPS and GE HealthCare best avoided

StockStory has named one cash-generating stock worth a closer look and two it would avoid, arguing that strong cash flow does not always mean strong returns. Clean Harbors (NYSE:CLH) is the pick. Its revenue grew 13.5% a year over five years, and earnings per share rose 21.6% a year, helped by share buybacks. Its free cash flow margin is 8.8%, up 5.9 percentage points over five years. The shares trade at $320.91, or 30.7x forward earnings. StockStory would steer clear of United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS) and GE HealthCare (NASDAQ:GEHC). UPS sales were flat over five years while earnings per share fell 8.4% a year. GE HealthCare faces projected sales growth of 4.4% and a 1.7-point drop in adjusted operating margin.

UPS spends $80M on Philippines hub 15 times larger, cutting Asia delivery by up to two days

UPS has opened a new air hub at Clark International Airport in the Philippines, 15 times larger than its predecessor. The $80 million expansion lets the carrier deliver up to two days faster within Asia. The 323,000-square-foot hub handles an average of 46,000 parcels a day, with a peak capacity of 15,000 pieces per hour. It has specialised areas for healthcare, high-tech and manufacturing shipments, including refrigeration and freezer units for temperature-sensitive goods. UPS runs 170 weekly flight segments through Clark, linking Asia Pacific, India, Europe, and the US in as little as one business day. The hub created nearly 600 jobs. UPS began operating at Clark in 2002 and announced the new facility in March 2024.
