Requirements
  • Completion of an Associate Degree in Biological Sciences or its equivalent to comprehend and apply principles of physiology to cardiac disease.
  • Passing the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) registry certification in Adult Echocardiography and Physics or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) is anticipated during the first two years of employment.
  • Registered sonographers must maintain active status by the ARDMS in Adult Echocardiography or RCS.
  • Maintain current compliance with ARDMS or RCS Continuing Medical Education requirements; a minimum of 15 continuing medical education credits is required over a three-year period for sonographers who are not registered.
  • In the absence of the minimum educational requirement, sufficient actual cardiac ultrasound work experience is acceptable.
  • Integrate diagnostic sonograms, laboratory results, patient history, and medical records, tailoring the echocardiogram as necessary.
  • Use independent judgment to acquire optimum diagnostic sonographic information in each examination.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and the health care team, recognizing the special nature of cardiac ultrasound examinations and patient needs.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and health care team.
  • Follow established departmental procedures.
  • Work efficiently and cope with emergency situations.
  • Obtain optimal images on technically difficult patients.
  • Understand basic and complex hemodynamics and wall motion abnormalities.
  • Understand true two-dimensional imaging planes, including that the imaging plane may change during a stress echocardiogram.
  • Progress to the next skill level.
  • Demonstrate competency in all aspects of echocardiograms to perform Exercise and Dobutamine Stress Echocardiograms and obtain the proper views.
  • Be physically and emotionally capable of carrying out assigned duties, including lifting some patients, moving wheeled equipment up to approximately 500 pounds, moving patients in wheelchairs and stretchers, and maintaining prolonged arm positions for scanning.
  • Comply with infection control policies and procedures at all times.
Responsibilities
  • Perform clinical assessment and diagnostic echocardiography examinations, including M-Mode, two-dimensional, Doppler and Color Doppler Echocardiography, Exercise Stress Echocardiograms, and Dobutamine Stress Echocardiograms.
  • Use cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information, and images.
  • Position patients, angle the transducer, and adjust machine controls, gain settings, and frequency across different machine types to produce the best possible resolution and cardiac ultrasound images.
  • Perform accurate and thorough measurements and calculations, including wall thickness, chamber size, valve orifice, blood velocity measurements, and pressure gradients across valve orifices.
  • Obtain appropriate patient medical histories and understand each patient’s diagnosis and the goals and limits of each study; record complete data to support evaluation of cardiac pathology.
  • Provide quality cardiac ultrasound examinations for varied adult patients, including elderly patients, patients in critical care units, and patients with complex congenital heart anomalies.
  • Use independent judgment during cardiac ultrasound examinations to differentiate normal and pathologic findings accurately.
  • Explain procedures to patients to reduce anxiety and elicit cooperation, maintain a professional and friendly manner, and respond appropriately to special needs.
  • Organize daily workflow efficiently to reduce patient waiting and examination times while obtaining complete, high-quality echocardiograms.
  • Address patient-care problems and make appropriate decisions to resolve them; handle difficult patients and situations competently.
  • Ensure patients’ safety and mental and physical comfort while in the sonographer’s care.
  • Coordinate with other staff to ensure appropriate patient care.
  • Follow the departmental Echocardiogram Protocol.
  • Recognize when contrast agents such as Optison or Definity and Agitated Saline are needed and obtain optimal images.
  • Coordinate work schedules with the Departmental Director and/or scheduling desk to ensure workload coverage.
  • Assist with daily Echocardiography Laboratory operations and maintain a daily log of patients seen.
  • Maintain ultrasound equipment, the work area, and adequate supplies.
  • Evaluate equipment malfunctions, communicate with the appropriate equipment representative, and report equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor or staff member.
  • Participate in maintaining laboratory accreditation.
  • Establish and maintain ethical working relationships and good rapport with related hospitals, referral agencies, and commercial agencies.
  • Provide in-service ultrasound training for Cardiology Fellows and junior sonographers.
  • Perform cardiac ultrasounds ordered by the attending physician for outpatient, inpatient, portable, and urgent cases.
  • Participate in research studies, which may include performing cardiac ultrasound on animals, imaging vascular structures such as the brachial and carotid arteries, and performing other aspects of cardiac ultrasound.
  • Identify patients by checking identification bands and/or asking them to confirm their name, date of birth, and test to be performed.
  • Take precept/charge duties as needed.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or Cardiovascular Technology Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
