Pima County’s Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department is hiring a Wastewater Specialist I. This entry-level position is a great opportunity to begin your career in the wastewater industry. Essential Functions:

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

• Performs repairs and routine maintenance of industrial wastewater pumps, pumping systems, industrial electrical systems, instrumentation, and power generating engines;

• Assists Wastewater Mechanics, Instrumentation Specialists, and Trades Maintenance Specialists and Technicians in non-routine maintenance, repairs and construction of assigned facilities and systems;

• Assists Wastewater Mechanics in the repair and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities and wastewater conveyance systems;

• Assists other journey-level trade workers, such as painters, welders, electricians, and instrumentation technicians;

• Assists specialists/technicians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of specialized equipment or controls;

• Lifts and moves heavy materials, tools, and supplies;

• Uses and maintains safety and personal protective equipment;

• Performs operator-level maintenance, servicing and adjustments of common tools and equipment;

• Performs worksite clean-up following completion of jobs.

Minimum Qualifications:

One year of experience working in industrial mechanical maintenance and repair, pumping systems, instrumentation, process control, electrical systems or power generation engine maintenance. (Work experience limited to automotive, truck or heavy equipment maintenance is not qualifying experience.

(Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)

OR:

One year of experience with Pima County as a Maintenance Mechanic, Utility Service Worker I, Trades Maintenance Helper or Trades Maintenance Technician in other than automotive, truck or heavy equipment repair and/or maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

• Minimum one (1) year experience with mechanical equipment, performing repairs and routine maintenance of pumping systems, pumps, gear boxes, plumbing, pipe fitting and compressor/blower maintenance.

• Experience with/knowledge of maintenance repair, preventative maintenance, diagnosing, or troubleshooting in wastewater, construction, or fabrication.

• Experience with/knowledge of using an Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).

• Experience with/knowledge of using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook).

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: Constantly operates and inspects mechanical equipment. Constantly positions self to use, inspect, clean or repair tools and machinery. Constantly observes details at close range. Frequently required to exchange accurate information. Frequently remains in a stationary position. Frequently moves tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequently operates a motor vehicle or golf cart safely and legally, in accordance with applicable state and federal transportation laws. Occasionally moves tools and equipment weighing up to 75 lbs. Occasionally ascends/descends machinery and equipment to repair/service. Frequently ascending and descending ladders and stairs to reach and work upon elevated or below-grade work platforms and job sites. Action Activity - bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching, squatting, stooping; Motion Activity - grasping; Hearing Activity - in a noisy areas, on a radio, behind themselves, equipment alarms; Speaking Activity - in person, on the phone, on the radio; Vision - operate a motor vehicle, may be required to get a CDL, operate a forklift/power industrial equipment, distinguish colors, have depth perception and peripheral vision. Frequently required to lift, push or pull objects weighing up to 75 pounds.

Working Conditions: Some positions may be required to go on an on-call rotation. Constantly exposed to loud noise levels. Constantly exposed to moving mechanical parts. Occasionally exposed to mechanical oils, vibration and risk of electrical shock. Working with or in the presence of obnoxious odors. Working with noxious or potentially hazardous chemicals, compounds or products. Constantly exposed to extreme heat. Occasionally confine space entry. Employees may be exposed to various weather conditions. Walking on uneven/slippery surfaces.
