Launch of self-driving taxis (robotaxis) in Dubai

Launch of self-driving taxis (robotaxis) in Dubai Dubai - Unit: Gemeel Automotive, a global leader in mobility solutions and the preferred partner for many of the most prestigious automotive brands, announced its cooperation with WeRide, a global leader in autonomous driving technology, aiming to expand the scope of autonomous mobility services in the UAE. Gemeel Automotive supports the deployment and operation of a fleet of self-driving robotaxis of the WeRide 'GXR' model by investing in electric vehicles from the brand Farizon Auto, which is the commercial vehicle arm of the Geely Holding Group. The advantages of the self-driving taxi (robotaxi) are based on the globally renowned Farizon 'SV' vehicle features from the Farizon Auto brand, characterized by a spacious interior, advanced safety structure, and high operational efficiency specifically designed to meet urban mobility requirements, in addition to its innovative hidden B-pillar design. In 2025, the Farizon SV obtained a five-star safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme and reached the finals and ranked second for the international van of the year award. Within this partnership, WeRide provides autonomous driving technology, while Gemeel Automotive invests in the fleet of self-driving robotaxis. This step underscores the pivotal role of Gemeel Automotive in implementing one of the first urban-level autonomous taxi projects in the world, supporting Dubai's ambitions in autonomous mobility. It also aligns with WeRide's asset-light operational strategy, enabling the expansion of commercial operations for self-driving taxis through trusted partners who contribute to fleet investment and platform resources. Transition from pilot to commercial application The autonomous mobility market in Dubai has successfully crossed a critical stage, marked by notable growth starting with supervised pilot routes in December 2025, culminating in obtaining a permit for the operation of commercial autonomous vehicles from WeRide in February 2026. From March 31, 2026, WeRide commenced full commercial operations of self-driving taxis in Dubai, via routes in the Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim areas, using vehicles provided by Gemeel Automotive. With attention shifting from technological showcases to the operational model required for expansion - fleet readiness, local deployment, service quality sustainability, and system integration - Gemeel Automotive plays a pivotal role in ensuring the success of this model on the ground as the fleet investor. Enhancing the role of the ecosystem Building on deep expertise spanning over 80 years in the automotive sector, Gemeel Automotive cooperates with WeRide in areas including autonomous vehicle technology, service platform access, operations, and regulatory oversight to enable the scaling of reliable service ready to meet customer needs. This cooperation aims to support this transformation, providing suitable conditions for sustainable and scalable autonomous mobility services, especially as the service expands in Dubai and, later, across the entire UAE. Commenting on this matter, Youssef Houssein, CEO of Gemeel Automotive in the Middle East, said, 'The autonomous mobility sector is witnessing a new phase in Dubai, transitioning from testing and pilot programs to integrated real commercial services across the emirate. We are pleased to collaborate with WeRide to support the development of a reliable and scalable ecosystem, which will be a cornerstone of this transformation, enhance customer confidence, and deliver real value to the transport system as a whole, supporting the UAE's ambitious vision for the future of mobility.' Supporting Dubai's aspirations to enhance the autonomous mobility sector Dubai continues to strengthen its position at the forefront of next-generation mobility solutions, supported by a clear policy ecosystem for the autonomous mobility sector. Efforts focus on the ambitious goal set by the Roads and Transport Authority and the Dubai Future Foundation to convert 25% of total mobility journeys in Dubai to autonomous journeys by 2030. In this context, this partnership represents a significant shift toward launching operational activities on the ground. WeRide's current fleet in the Middle East includes approximately 250 robotaxis. Through deploying Farizon Auto electric vehicles on public roads, Gemeel Automotive aims to contribute to turning strategic ambitions into tangible reality, supporting the dissemination of high-performance autonomous mobility solutions accessible to all, while enhancing urban mobility safety and efficiency in the region.
