Banner North Colorado Medical Center brings new minimally invasive lung cancer treatment to Northern Colorado. Pulsed electric field therapy targets lung tumors without surgery GREELEY, Colo. (Oct. 26, 2026) - Banner North Colorado Medical Center is now treating cancer patients with Aliya Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) therapy, a new, minimally invasive technology that allows physicians to target and break up cancerous tissue without surgery. J. David Cowden, MD, an interventional pulmonologist at Banner North Colorado Medical Center, is leading the program. The therapy gives the care team another option for patients whose tumors are difficult to reach through traditional methods or who have struggled with the side effects of standard treatment. During the procedure, the physician guides a thin, flexible scope into the lungs and passes a needle inserted through a scope to the tumor. The needle delivers precise electrical pulses that break apart cancer cells while preserving the healthy tissue around them. Because the treatment is delivered through the airway, it does not require an incision. "Some of the toughest cases we see are tumors in spots that are hard to reach, or patients who have already been through treatments that took a real toll on them," said Dr. Cowden. "This therapy lets us go after those tumors precisely, without an incision, and do it right here in Northern Colorado. Banner Health is the first in the state to offer this kind of care." PEF therapy can be used alongside other cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy. Early clinical studies suggest it may also help activate the body's immune response against cancer. Patients who want to learn if PEF may be right for them should talk with their primary care doctor or call the Banner Health Clinic pulmonology team in Greeley at 970-810-2026. Northern Colorado hospitals earn Breastfeeding Excellence Awards. October 11, 2026 Greeley and Fort Collins Banner Health facilities recognized for maternity care and breastfeeding support. Two Banner Health hospitals in Northern Colorado received statewide recognition for supporting breastfeeding families and improving maternity care. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) honored Banner Northern Colorado Medical Center in Greeley with the Colorado Hospital Breastfeeding Excellence Platinum Award. At the same time, Banner Fort Collins Medical Center received the Gold Award. The awards were presented September 16 as part of the Colorado Hospital Lactation Collaborative, which recognized 36 hospitals statewide for implementing evidence-based maternity care practices designed to support breastfeeding and improve outcomes for mothers and infants. The recognition highlights the hospitals' efforts to establish policies that help new parents receive education, guidance, and support during the critical first days after childbirth. "This recognition reflects the dedication of our nurses, lactation consultants, and physicians at both Banner Northern Colorado Medical Center and Banner Fort Collins Medical Center. They give new parents the time, support and confidence they need in those first days with their baby," said Julia Reinink, Banner Health's chief nursing officer in Northern Colorado. "We're proud to be part of the Colorado Hospital Lactation Collaborative and to help families across Northern Colorado get a strong, healthy start close to home," Reinink added. Supporting families beyond the hospital. The Colorado Hospital Breastfeeding Excellence Awards recognize hospitals that adopt practices aligned with the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative's Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. Award levels range from Bronze to Diamond, depending on how many of the recommended practices a hospital has implemented. These practices include policies intended to help families initiate breastfeeding, receive appropriate lactation support, and continue breastfeeding after leaving the hospital. According to CDPHE, these practices can benefit families well beyond their hospital stay. "Evidence-based hospital practices can make a meaningful difference not only in whether families start breastfeeding, but in how long they continue," said Stacy Miller, breastfeeding specialist at CDPHE and facilitator of the Colorado Hospital Lactation Collaborative. Miller said Colorado data indicate that parents who received at least five of the Ten Steps during their hospital stay continued breastfeeding approximately three months longer than those who did not. Statewide effort to improve maternity care. The Colorado Hospital Lactation Collaborative provides free training, resources, and technical assistance to hospitals and birthing facilities working to strengthen breastfeeding support. The collaborative also helps facilities pursue and maintain Baby-Friendly designation, an internationally recognized program promoting evidence-based maternity care. During the September recognition event, CDPHE also acknowledged eight Colorado facilities that have received and maintained Baby-Friendly designation. For Northern Colorado families, the awards recognize local maternity care teams' efforts to provide consistent breastfeeding education and support during hospital stays. Families interested in learning more about the statewide initiative can visit CDPHE's Breastfeeding Essentials page. Of the 250 organizations recognized in the competitive nationwide ranking, Banner was the only Arizona-headquartered health system on the list, further cementing its standing as a leading workplace for healthcare professionals across the country. "Being named to the Forbes list for the second year in a row is a reflection of the people who make Banner what it is," said Amy Perry, president and chief executive officer of Banner Health. The Forbes ranking is based on an independent survey of more than 30,000 healthcare professionals across the U.S., drawing from more than one million employer evaluations collected over a three-year period. Evaluations covered a broad range of factors including wages, working conditions, career advancement and safety. At a time when stress and burnout remain persistent challenges across the healthcare industry, Banner's One Team culture, emphasis on career growth and sustained commitment to team member well-being continue to set it apart as a place where people choose to build meaningful careers.
