Stryker misses Q3 estimates with $6.52B revenue as orthopaedics slows and guidance is cut

Stryker missed Wall Street expectations in the third quarter of 2026, even as sales rose 7.6% year on year to $6.52 billion. Analysts had expected $6.62 billion. Adjusted earnings of $3.52 per share fell short of the $3.55 consensus. The medical technology company blamed a slowdown in US hip and knee replacements, citing patient affordability, more insurance pre-authorization denials, and problems after a new SAP system rollout. Operating margin fell to 15.9% from 18.7% a year earlier. Stryker cut its full-year adjusted earnings guidance to $14.85 per share at the midpoint, down 1.2%. It expects softness to continue, but is counting on product launches, robotics, and recent acquisitions, including ZuriMED, to drive growth. Shares trade at $296.17, down from $311.75 before the results.

Stryker shares fall 10% as 2026 sales guidance is cut to 6.5%-7.0% growth

Stryker shares fell about 10% to $279.98 before the open on Friday, after the medical device maker missed third-quarter estimates and cut its 2026 sales guidance. The stock was already down about 20% this year. Adjusted earnings per share were $3.52 against $3.55 expected. Revenue was $6.52 billion against $6.62 billion expected, up 7.6%. Stryker now expects 2026 organic sales growth of 6.5% to 7.0%, down from 8.3% to 9.3%. Its adjusted EPS guidance fell to $14.80 to $14.90 from $14.95 to $15.10. Chief executive officer Kevin Lobo said the Mako RPS hip and knee system is "off to a slow start." Spencer Stiles succeeds him and will issue the 2027 guidance early next year.

Stryker Q3 sales rise 7.7% to $6.5B, but miss expectations; $3B added to buyback

Stryker reported third-quarter net sales of $6.5 billion, up 7.7% from a year earlier. Organic sales also rose 7.7%, driven mainly by higher unit volume. Reported net earnings fell 12.3% to $753 million, or $1.96 per diluted share, down 11.7%. Adjusted earnings per share rose 10.3% to $3.52, and adjusted operating margin rose 60 basis points to 26.2%. MedSurg and Neurotechnology sales grew 9.2% to $3.7 billion. Orthopaedics sales rose 5.7% to $2.9 billion. Chief executive officer Kevin A. Lobo said the results fell short of expectations, but he expects a solid fourth quarter. Stryker now expects 2026 organic sales growth of 6.5% to 7.0% and adjusted earnings per share of $14.80 to $14.90. It bought back $1.0 billion of stock in the quarter, and its board added $3.0 billion to the repurchase programme.

Stryker lags peers with 8.5% growth as plant problems, not hospitals, hit sales

Stryker's stock has lost 20.2% over the past 12 months, dividends included, while the S&P 500 returned 15.0%. Its revenue grew 8.5% over the latest four quarters, slower than four of its five peers, including Boston Scientific (13.5%) and Intuitive Surgical (20.5%). Management says hospital demand is steady. It blames the slowdown on a cybersecurity incident that halted manufacturing and on supply problems in peripheral vascular products. First-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue grew just 2.6%, and operating margin fell to 15.5%. Margin recovered to 25.2% in the second quarter. The stock fell 8.8% on September 8, 2026, after the chief financial officer said the vascular issue was unresolved. Third-quarter results are due October 29, 2026. Spencer Stiles will succeed Kevin Lobo as chief executive officer on January 1, 2027.
