About the job

Requirements
  • A degree in Physics or a related field, or equivalent experience in a similarly deep technical environment such as optics or complex experimental systems.
  • At least 8 years of technical leadership and people management, including leading physicists, scientists, systems engineers, or similar specialists.
  • Direct experience in reliability engineering, resilience engineering, incident management, or Learning From Incidents.
  • Experience with automation, calibration, maintenance, or operations management for complex technical systems, ideally in on-call or service-oriented environments.
  • Strong communication and judgment, with experience balancing time, cost, quality, and operational risk across functions.
  • Ability to identify issues quickly, work effectively across disciplines, and help a team operate with clarity in a fast-moving, highly technical business.
  • Prior quantum computing experience is not required.
Responsibilities
  • Lead day-to-day fleet support, incident response, operational readiness, and continuous improvement for hosted quantum systems, as well as installation and maintenance of internal systems at the College Park office.
  • Set direction for the team, support individual growth, and ensure the group responds effectively to immediate operational issues and longer-term reliability challenges.
  • Resolve complex issues across operations, engineering, and physics; strengthen fleet performance; and feed operational learning into future designs, tooling, and automation.
  • Establish durable operating processes, metrics, and prioritization habits that provide clear ownership and escalation.
  • Lead, develop, and grow a team of Operating Physicists who keep the hosted quantum computing fleet running reliably.
  • Own team strategy and execution across fleet operations, incident response, operational readiness, deployment support, and continuous improvement.

  • Define and track team performance metrics, building a culture of technical rigor, learning from incidents, and strong operational judgment.
  • Build a follow-the-sun operating model with colleagues in Europe, improving processes, handoffs, and clarity.
  • Fulfill some on-call responsibility in support of the live fleet.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with automation, calibration, maintenance, or operations management for complex technical systems, ideally in on-call or service-oriented environments.

About the company

IonQ sells quantum computing through cloud access and on-site systems that use trapped-ion qubits. Its processors, such as Forte and Tempo, are accessed by customers via cloud platforms or deployed on customer sites, and the company is expanding into quantum networking, quantum key distribution, and sensing through acquisitions and a SkyWater Technology deal. It differentiates itself with trapped-ion technology and by building a broader quantum ecosystem through strategic acquisitions and partnerships to connect devices and services beyond hardware alone. Its goal is to scale commercial quantum computing, grow revenue, and strengthen its cash position to support ongoing expansion and ecosystem development.

IonQ's $80.1M quarterly sales surge 287%, but heavy cash burn keeps one investor away

IonQ, a quantum computing company listed on the NYSE, is a risky buy at current prices, according to one analyst view. Its second-quarter sales reached $80.1 million, up 287% from a year earlier, and it now expects full-year revenue of $450 million to $460 million after acquiring chip maker SkyWater Technology. Losses are steep. Operating losses hit $337 million in the quarter, more than four times revenue, and the company burns about $450 million a year. Its $2 billion in cash and investments gives it roughly four years of runway. The stock trades at a price-to-sales ratio above 40, and a commercially viable quantum computer could be a decade away. The author expects IonQ to sell more stock, diluting shareholders, and the share price to fall.

BofA backs IonQ and Quantinuum as top quantum picks, citing $300M DARPA deal

BofA Securities remains upbeat on quantum computing stocks, naming trapped-ion technology as its preferred approach. It expects the shares to stay volatile but is confident leading companies can reach quantum advantage before 2030. It rates IonQ a Buy. The company won a DARPA Quantum Benchmarking Initiative Stage C selection worth up to $300 million and completed a $2 billion stock offering at $40 per share. It is also buying cybersecurity firm Elisity for up to $1.3 billion in stock, with closing expected in the fourth quarter. BofA also rates Quantinuum a Buy despite a recent selloff. The company holds $2.1 billion in cash and leads peers in logical qubits, though it remains in DARPA's Stage B.

IonQ is the one quantum stock to buy with $1,000, despite $273M cash burn

A Motley Fool columnist says IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) is the one quantum computing stock he would buy with $1,000, though he calls it a speculative pick within a diversified portfolio. IonQ uses trapped-ion technology, in which ions hold their quantum states longer, cutting error rates. It is natively integrated with Google Cloud, Microsoft's Azure Quantum, and Amazon's Braket, and it has a deal with Nvidia to link its Superion 256 system with Nvidia's AI supercomputing rack. The finances are risky. Revenue rose 412% year on year in the first half of 2026, but free cash flow was negative $273 million. IonQ holds more than $2.1 billion in liquidity, about four years at the current burn rate, and trades at a price-to-sales ratio of 44.

IonQ's quarterly revenue hits $80M, nearing Innodata's $92.1M as AI data firm's growth slows

IONQ's quarterly revenue is close to overtaking Innodata's, as the quantum computing company grows far faster than the artificial intelligence data firm. IONQ earned $80.0 million in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up from $12.4 million in the quarter ended September 30, 2024. Innodata took in $92.1 million, up from $52.2 million. Innodata's growth has slowed in 2026. Leadership changes in its chief executive officer and chief financial officer roles have also weighed on the stock, which is down about 35% over the past 12 months. IONQ has agreed to acquire an enterprise security infrastructure company in an all-stock deal valued at $1.3 billion. It also reached the final round of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative on October 7.
