Requirements
  • Internal candidates must have three years of continuous experience as a Police Officer with the University of Mississippi Police Department, or one year of continuous experience there plus five cumulative years as a full-time sworn officer with another law enforcement agency or agencies.
  • External candidates must have verifiable supervisory experience at the sergeant level or above for at least two years.
  • A high school education is required.
  • Candidates must attach a cover letter and resume for consideration.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise officers through training, scheduling, and day-to-day activities.
  • Develop and communicate directives to staff and monitor compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Supervise and perform follow-up investigations and special surveillance.
  • Provide guidance to assigned officers testifying in court and review cases for proper documentation.
  • Supervise and develop community-oriented police activities on assigned shifts.
  • Supervise enforcement of traffic and parking regulations.
  • Organize and conduct crime-prevention training programs for public awareness.
  • Prepare and present evidence in civil and criminal court and university proceedings.
  • Review and approve officer reports on incidents and criminal investigations.
  • Patrol assigned areas to detect crime, violations of university regulations, and security concerns.
  • Regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic; investigate traffic accidents and file accident reports; enforce campus parking rules; issue citations; and authorize towing and bicycle impoundments.
  • Prepare incident reports and other assigned reports.
  • Provide field training and participate in crime-prevention training programs.
  • Support customer-service personnel, enhance patron experiences, and manage crowd control at campus events.
  • Assist ambulance services, provide first-aid treatment, and provide emergency escort services.
  • Maintain professional standards through education and research and apply advanced techniques to improve police performance.
  • Maintain public confidence through public-relations efforts.
  • Provide security for university events, transfer university funds, and escort special guests.
  • Make arrests, prepare criminal cases, and testify in court or hearings concerning traffic violations, criminal offenses, and disciplinary matters.
  • Assume field-training-officer duties and may serve as Officer in Charge.
  • Direct and assist investigations of alleged, suspected, or actual criminal offenses and university-policy, state-law, and federal-law violations.
  • Locate and interrogate witnesses, suspects, and victims; develop evidence; and secure information for investigations and court or university proceedings.
  • Prepare initial case reports, periodic progress reports, and case-determination reports.
  • Serve as a liaison with area law-enforcement agencies.
  • Coordinate and participate in internal security investigations, background investigations, and related activities.
  • Develop, collect, process, and control crime-intelligence materials and maintain source and informant control.
  • Maintain and control physical evidence and recovered property and document those items.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment and supplies used for investigations.
  • Conduct and design physical-security surveys of university buildings and facilities.
  • Serve as supervisor to officers in the Lieutenant's absence.
  • Ensure subordinate employees comply with department policies and procedures.
  • Perform related or similar duties as assigned.
