Requirements
  • A graduate degree is required. If the graduate degree is not in nursing, a bachelor's degree in nursing and a graduate degree in a related discipline from an accredited program recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation is required.
  • At least three years of experience as a professional registered nurse providing direct patient care is required.
  • A current unencumbered state professional registered nurse license or enhanced compact nurse licensure relevant to the state of teaching location is required.
  • Professional competence and expertise in teaching must be maintained through activities such as nursing practice, continuing education programs, conferences, workshops, seminars, academic courses, research projects, and professional writing.
  • Requirements are subject to state Board of Nursing, Board of Registered Nursing, or Higher Education Board regulations where the campus or student is located.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, teach, evaluate, and revise the philosophy, objectives, and curriculum of the nursing education program.
  • Document faculty and committee meeting actions using a systematic plan of evaluation for total program review.
  • Lead simulation learning experiences in the nursing laboratory.
  • Teach and evaluate students in the classroom, with at least 36 credits taught annually.
  • Design an effective learning environment addressing contemporary nursing issues.
  • Support students' academic progression and socialization into the nursing role.
  • Use assessment tools to evaluate student learning.
  • Participate in curriculum design, program evaluation, and program revision.
  • Mentor faculty, adjuncts, and students.
  • Serve as an advisor to an assigned group of core nursing students, contacting advisees at least once per semester in person, by phone, and electronically.
  • Develop student success plans and remediate at-risk students.
  • Oversee instruction and grading of clinical adjuncts.
  • Facilitate students' application of nursing theory to clinical practice.
  • Attend hospital-based orientations.
  • Communicate with clinical agency representatives, staff, faculty, and students using professional techniques.
  • Identify and communicate clinical problem areas or concerns to Course Lead Faculty and recommend appropriate changes and solutions.
  • Provide weekly and as-needed communication to Course Lead Faculty about student progress, clinical issues, suggestions, and professional learning needs.
  • Grade clinical papers and provide students with timely, clear feedback.
  • Maintain records of student performance, including Student Success Plans, Progressive Disciplinary Plans, and mid-term and final clinical evaluations.
  • Complete clinical site evaluations.
  • Adhere to and enforce the policies and procedures of the college and assigned clinical facility.
  • Plan, teach, and evaluate classroom, clinical, skills-lab, and other learning experiences with other team members.
  • Connect students with college resources for their success.
  • Coach students on leadership and ethics, communication and critical thinking, teamwork and collaboration, and responsibility and dependability.
  • Maintain a campus presence and contribute positively to campus culture.
  • Provide input on developing, evaluating, and revising admission, progression, and completion policies through the governance structure.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, in-service offerings, and nursing events such as graduation and white coat ceremonies.
  • Complete required Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act training and uphold its guidelines.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience teaching in a registered nursing program at a college or university.
  • Certified Nurse Educator certification and national certification in an area of nursing specialty.
