Requirements
  • A minimum of five years of management experience in a law enforcement or similar security setting.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record subject to continuous third-party monitoring.
  • Must complete all Vanderbilt University Public Safety training requirements within 30 days of hire, including de-escalation, Pressure Point Control Tactics, pepper spray training or equivalent, CPR and automated external defibrillator certification, and Community Service Officer training.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of all university and police department written directives, rules, and regulations.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to supervise, guide, and develop staff for increased responsibility.
  • Must be able to lead with relative independence and limited direction across a wide range of assignments.
  • Must demonstrate expertise in performance management, including evaluations, feedback, and handling disciplinary and performance issues fairly.
  • Must be able to make timely, sound decisions based on presented facts and accept responsibility for outcomes.
  • Must have customer service skills and maintain professionalism and credibility with diverse internal and external contacts.
  • Must demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, enforcement personnel, and university and medical center constituents.
  • Must remain calm, objective, and self-restrained in stressful, unpleasant, or changing situations.
  • Must demonstrate problem-solving, organization, prioritization, and multitasking skills in a dynamic environment.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods, walk, climb, and lift, and meet departmental appearance and grooming standards.
  • Must pass a background investigation and drug test and have a driving record and criminal history that do not prohibit certification under the Tennessee Private Protective Services Act.
  • Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays and work in inclement weather and various weather extremes.
  • Must be able to use necessary precautionary equipment and work around hazardous materials, infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, loud noises, and potential physical danger.
  • Must obtain required immunizations and medical tests to work in patient care and high-risk areas.
Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic and tactical leadership for a designated security unit or shift, including staffing, resource allocation, and performance outcomes.
  • Develop, maintain, and adjust shift schedules to ensure continuous and efficient coverage.
  • Lead routine audits and inspections of personnel, equipment, and processes for compliance with departmental standards.
  • Review and authorize supervisory reports and documentation.
  • Maintain operational records and data and conduct research for strategic proposals and contingency plans.
  • Serve as operational backup for shift supervisors during critical staffing needs or emergencies.
  • Oversee training and professional development for direct reports, including Weapons Detection Specialists and Community Service Officers.
  • Validate and approve timesheets and payroll submissions.
  • Review and approve time-off requests and manage leave-of-absence processes in compliance with organizational policies.
  • Serve as the payroll and time-approval delegate when the shift supervisor is absent.
  • Conduct formal performance evaluations and performance-management conversations for direct reports.
  • Coach and mentor staff and lead corrective-action and counseling sessions.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations into employee misconduct and recommend disciplinary actions in alignment with human resources and departmental guidelines.
  • Participate in recruitment and selection, including interviews and hiring recommendations.
  • Ensure timely and effective emergency response for fire, medical, and other incidents.
  • Supervise building security checks, directed patrols, and biweekly emergency-phone testing.
  • Manage and coordinate vehicle access services, motorist assistance, and security and personal-safety escort requests.
  • Oversee secure transport services for psychiatric patients in collaboration with medical personnel and in compliance with safety protocols.
  • Implement accountability frameworks for equitable and consistent service delivery.
  • Maintain relationships with the university, medical center, and surrounding community and lead proactive patrol and collaborative security-risk mitigation initiatives.
  • Represent the department in cross-functional meetings and compile and present data for compliance and strategic planning.
  • Coordinate physical-security and crime-prevention strategies with Community Relations personnel.
  • Manage security operations for high-profile events, including athletic competitions, commencement ceremonies, concerts, and dignitary visits.
  • Keep departmental leadership informed of significant security incidents and trends and lead management meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Working knowledge of standard computer programs, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • A bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Business Management, or a related field.
