Shift Trader @ Octopus Energy

Working closely with trading, risk, and origination colleagues to help Octopus navigate the energy transition. We believe in applying technology efficiently to help decarbonise the grid. We’ve done this through transparent tariffs, turn-down projects or clever EV charging. Also, we have a large renewable and growing battery portfolio! We are looking for a power shift trader to help with our activities in the UK. In this role you will work on the execution of our trading strategies for our demand, renewable assets and flexibility portfolios. You will primarily be trading on short term (intra-day) power markets in the UK, with some potential to add gas and international markets in the future.

You’ll be working on a 24-hour shift desk, analysing and reacting to changing market fundamentals as soon as they’re published in real-time. This is a super exciting role with a very immediate sense of achievement, but it requires a huge amount of focus and a resolve to stay calm when things sometimes go against you. You’ll also be working independently quite frequently, particularly during night shifts, so you’ll need to have the confidence to make decisions by yourself. We’re in the early stages of forming the team so you’ll have a key influence in informing the ways we can best support you in the role, as well as helping to build and design trading strategies. Longer term, we’ll be looking to introduce international markets, as well as developing our algo trading capabilities and proprietary trading book.

What you’ll do

Optimising trading for Octopus’ portfolio as demand and generation forecasts change
Ensure trading is executed within agreed risk limits
React quickly to market fundamentals to reduce exposure to volatility
Execute orders on behalf of different areas of the business, from flexibility to retail to PPA
Contribute analysis to support Octopus’ trading strategies, including the design and improvement of Algo-trading strategies
Liaise with the other traders on evolving market dynamics and system trends

What you’ll need

Experience in the UK/European Power markets with a focus on trading
Proven statistical/mathematical skills
Ability to maintain focus for extended periods of time
A competitive edge with a desire to take advantage of market opportunities
Able to stay cool under pressure and react to fast moving events
Genuine interest in markets and supply/demand dynamics
Willing to work a rotational shift pattern, including nights and weekends
Experience in trading on an exchange-based platform beneficial
