Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field.
  • At least one year of equivalent experience working in a biology and/or chemistry laboratory.
  • Ability to use judgment in setting priorities and take initiative in unexpected situations.
  • Ability to stay current in techniques and standards of a modern biological teaching laboratory.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English at a college level.
  • Ability to perform complex mathematical, statistical, and other higher mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the institution in written and spoken form.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Regular and prompt attendance during the academic year.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment; a respiratory function test and ability to use respirators may be required.
  • Ability to navigate stairs, uneven surfaces, hills, slopes, and outdoor campus areas in varying weather conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and perform set-up and clean-up for Biology teaching laboratories.
  • Coordinate and prioritize requests from multiple divisional faculty for laboratory and course-material preparation.
  • Prepare chemical reagents and media for teaching and research laboratories and oversee their proper disposal.
  • Work with organisms, maintain cultures, and ensure proper disposal.
  • Gather materials and equipment, complete laboratory set-ups, and oversee clean-ups of laboratory classrooms and active learning spaces.
  • Maintain logs and records of laboratory preparations, calculations, recipes, and clean-up requirements for annual reference.
  • Hire, train, instruct, schedule, assign tasks to, and supervise work-study students, including overseeing their timesheets and safe work practices.
  • Maintain divisional compliance with Environmental Protection Agency, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Environmental Conservation, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regulations and guidelines related to chemical and biological hazards and waste.
  • Maintain the chemical inventory, including updating inventory, labeling, safe storage, and proper disposal.
  • Monitor, treat, and dispose of biohazardous waste at Biosafety Level 1 and Biosafety Level 2, ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor, treat, and dispose of chemical waste, including Satellite Accumulation Area inspections, disposal, and documentation.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and comply with safety rules, regulations, protocols, and training.
  • Participate in the Biosafety and Chemical Hygiene Committees.
  • Maintain equipment and general supply stocks for the division.
  • Perform routine maintenance on balances, centrifuges, microscopes, meters, spectrophotometers, deionized water systems, autoclaves, dishwasher equipment, and laptop computers, or coordinate external maintenance contracts.
  • Research, write, and update procedures related to equipment use and maintenance.
  • Maintain a database of divisional equipment.
  • Request quotes, research, and order supplies and equipment while working with multiple vendors.
  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.
