Requirements
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of West Virginia, or applicable state where services will be performed.
  • Board certified or recertified by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Maintain patient safety and confidentiality, follow infection-control precautions, and work within the scope of delineated clinical privileges.
  • Maintain excellence in airway management and be familiar with airway adjuncts such as Bullard devices, fiberoptic scopes, and intubating laryngeal mask airways.
  • Perform required anesthesia techniques, including intravenous catheter insertion, invasive monitoring catheter insertion, endotracheal intubation and extubation, and arterial puncture for arterial blood gas interpretation.
  • Recognize abnormal patient responses to anesthesia, initiate corrective measures, determine the need for additional laboratory tests, and provide resuscitative care as necessary.
  • Administer intravenous fluids and blood products in accordance with the patient's medical history, surgical procedure, and applicable consultation requirements.
  • Perform required safety and performance checks on anesthesia-related equipment and verify appropriate supplies before initiating care.
  • Review informed-consent documentation and identify the appropriate surgical site during the surgical briefing.
  • Assume responsibility for controlled substances according to department and hospital policy and state and federal guidelines.
  • Be able to see details at close range and maintain composure in high-stress situations.
  • Work reliably and responsibly, adapt to considerable workplace variety, and work congenially with individuals with differing abilities, personalities, and interests.
  • Work in close contact with infectious diseases and potentially hazardous compounds, solutions, medications, radiation, chemicals, sterilizing agents, and anesthetics.
  • Be available for on-call work and shifts that may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
Responsibilities
  • Provide anesthetic care for patients undergoing all types of procedures in cooperation with the supervising or medically directing physician and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Administer anesthesia to render patients insensitive to pain during surgery and procedures.
  • Continuously monitor patients' physical responses to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents and report adverse conditions to the surgeon or anesthesiologist.
  • Participate in pre-anesthetic patient evaluations and select anesthetic agents and techniques.
  • Manage induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases.
  • Evaluate and manage patients during the immediate postoperative period.
  • Administer blood products after obtaining a hematocrit and consulting with the surgeon or anesthesiologist.
  • Document patient status appropriately in the anesthesia record.
  • Procure and assemble anesthesia equipment and supplies when an anesthesia technician is unavailable.
  • Participate in the surgical pause in the operating room with the entire surgical team in accordance with departmental and regulatory standards.
  • Communicate appropriately with individuals involved in perioperative and postoperative patient care.
  • Provide anesthesia care in a life-threatening emergency in the absence of an anesthesiologist.
  • Assist with teaching and evaluating newly hired CRNAs, graduate registered nurse anesthetists, and student registered nurse anesthetists.
