Requirements
  • A B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Proficiency in 3D computer-aided design, with Siemens NX strongly preferred and SolidWorks or CATIA considered.
  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5.
  • Familiarity with common structural and fluid components and instrumentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to work directly with hardware, run tests, and troubleshoot on the floor.
  • For Engineer I, foundational proficiency in computer-aided design and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, with coursework or project experience in finite element analysis, fluid mechanics, and structural analysis.
  • For Engineer I, hands-on experience through internships, capstone projects, laboratory work, or personal hardware builds.
  • For Engineer II, demonstrated professional experience taking hardware from design to test and the ability to own a component or subsystem with limited supervision.
  • For Senior Engineer, deep expertise in at least one domain such as fluid systems, structures, mechanisms, thermal, or test; experience owning hardware from concept through production or flight; expert-level computer-aided design and drawing generation; strong finite element analysis fundamentals; deep understanding of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturing and assembly practices.
  • For Staff Engineer, recognized technical leadership, system-level architecture experience, and experience driving design-for-manufacturability and scalability from prototype to production.
  • For Staff Engineer, experience managing schedule, cost, and deliverables for a module or product line.
  • Compliance with U.S. Government space technology trade restrictions, including ITAR and EAR, and the ability to satisfy applicable U.S. Person, trade-license, clearance, and government-contract eligibility requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Design, analyze, and qualify rocket components and hardware, including structural assemblies, fluid-system components, mechanisms, and ground-support equipment and structures.
  • Generate 3D models, fully dimensioned drawings, and interface control documents according to ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standards using Siemens NX or equivalent computer-aided design software.
  • Perform structural, thermal, and tolerance analyses using finite element analysis tools such as NASTRAN, NX Simcenter, and Ansys, along with hand calculations.
  • Support prototype builds, qualification campaigns, and acceptance testing; work directly with technicians to debug and iterate hardware.
  • Develop and execute component- and system-level qualification test plans, interpret results, and drive design changes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders through preliminary design reviews, critical design reviews, and test readiness reviews; maintain engineering documentation including technical data packages, compliance plans, and failure mode and effects analyses.
  • Identify and apply appropriate manufacturing processes, including machining, welding, brazing, forming, and heat treating.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of team processes, tooling, and analytical capabilities.
  • For Engineer I, work under the guidance of senior engineers and begin owning discrete sub-components or test tasks.
  • For Engineer II, own a component or subsystem with limited supervision.
  • For Senior Engineer, lead design reviews, provide technical guidance to junior engineers, and manage cross-team interfaces.
  • For Staff Engineer, set direction for complex multidisciplinary programs, own system-level architecture, lead hardware from concept through operational deployment, mentor engineers, shape team standards and processes, and influence technical and strategic program-level decisions.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with structural finite element analysis using NASTRAN and/or thermal or computational fluid dynamics tools such as Thermal Desktop and Star-CCM+.
  • Background in high-pressure or cryogenic fluid systems, including LOX, RP-1, or similar propellants.
  • Experience with product lifecycle management tools such as Teamcenter or similar software.
  • Familiarity with ASME, NASA, MIL-STD, or ECSS standards and their application.
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability hardware environments.
  • Experience with high-pressure systems above 6,000 psi, cryogenic systems, or flight-critical systems.

Astra has shipped 110 satellite engine systems since January 2025, surpassing a key milestone set when the company went private in 2024.
