Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required.
  • Proficiency in three-dimensional computer-aided design, with Siemens NX strongly preferred and SolidWorks or CATIA considered.
  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing according to ASME Y14.5 is required.
  • Familiarity with common structural and fluid components and instrumentation is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team are required.
  • Ability to work directly with hardware, run tests, and troubleshoot on the floor is required.
  • Engineer I candidates need foundational proficiency in computer-aided design and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, plus coursework or project experience in finite element analysis, fluid mechanics, and structural analysis.
  • Engineer I candidates need hands-on experience through internships, capstone projects, laboratory work, or personal hardware builds.
  • Engineer II candidates need 2-4 years of professional experience taking hardware from design to test.
  • Senior Engineer candidates need 5-8 years of experience and deep expertise in at least one domain such as fluid systems, structures, mechanisms, thermal engineering, or testing.
  • Staff Engineer candidates need 8 or more years of experience and recognized technical leadership in complex, multidisciplinary programs.
Responsibilities
  • Design, analyze, and qualify rocket components and hardware, including structural assemblies, fluid-system components, mechanisms, and ground support equipment and structures.
  • Generate three-dimensional models, fully dimensioned drawings, and interface control documents according to ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standards using Siemens NX or equivalent computer-aided design software.
  • Perform structural, thermal, and tolerance analyses using finite element analysis tools and hand calculations to validate design robustness.
  • Support prototype builds, qualification campaigns, and acceptance testing; work directly with technicians to debug and iterate hardware.
  • Develop and execute component- and system-level qualification test plans, interpret results, and drive design changes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders through preliminary design reviews, critical design reviews, and test readiness reviews.
  • Maintain complete engineering documentation, including technical data packages, compliance plans, and failure mode and effects analyses.
  • Identify and apply appropriate manufacturing processes, including machining, welding, brazing, forming, and heat treating.
  • Contribute to improvements in team processes, tooling, and analytical capabilities.
  • Own hardware from concept through production or flight at the senior level.
  • Lead design reviews, provide technical guidance to junior engineers, and manage cross-team interfaces at the senior level.
  • Own system-level architecture and lead hardware from concept through operational deployment at the staff level.
  • Drive design for manufacturability and scalability from prototype to production at the staff level.
  • Mentor engineers and shape team standards, processes, and analytical tools at the staff level.
  • Influence technical and strategic decisions at the program level and communicate with leadership and customers.
  • Manage schedule, cost, and deliverables for a module or product line at the staff level.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with structural finite element analysis using NASTRAN and/or thermal or computational fluid dynamics tools such as Thermal Desktop and Star-CCM+.
  • Background in high-pressure or cryogenic fluid systems, including LOX or RP-1 propellants.
  • Experience with product lifecycle management tools such as Teamcenter or similar software.
  • Familiarity with ASME, NASA, MIL-STD, or ECSS standards and their application.
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability hardware environments.
  • Experience with high-pressure systems above 6,000 psi, cryogenic systems, or flight-critical systems.

Astra closed $13 million in contracts during Q4 2025 for 36 additional systems scheduled for 2026 delivery. All deployed satellite engines are performing nominally with 100% mission reliability. The company has progressed its new rocket development to approximately 75% first-stage and 90% upper-stage design completion. Astra has engaged Nasdaq Private Markets and Siebert as advisors for a private capital raise.
