Requirements
  • Completion of a CAHIIM-approved coding certificate program, Health Information Management Technology program, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Demonstrated coding proficiency through completion of OSUWMC’s coding test.
  • Familiarity or experience with computer-assisted coding or automated encoder software.
  • An Associate’s Degree in Health Information Management.
  • At least 1 year of outpatient coding experience including cancer, transplant, obstetrics, rehabilitation, and cardiology service lines.
  • Alternatively, 3 years of acute-care academic medical center outpatient coding experience within an academic Health Information Management department, including cancer, transplant, obstetrics, rehabilitation, and cardiology service lines.
  • Credentialing as a Registered Health Information Technician, Registered Health Information Administrator, or Certified Coding Specialist by the American Health Information Management Association.
  • For outpatient work, an RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or COC outpatient credential.
  • Maintenance of continuing education requirements established by the American Health Information Management Association or AAPC.
  • Attendance at monthly coding meetings and coding education sessions.
  • Maintenance of a minimum score of 90% on coding assessments.
Responsibilities
  • Assign diagnosis and procedural codes to inpatient and outpatient medical records for reimbursement and data collection.
  • Code medical records and other documents at the conclusion of each patient visit.
  • Select appropriate admitting, principal, and secondary diagnoses and procedures.
  • Assign accurate International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification/Procedure Coding System and Current Procedural Terminology codes.
  • Sequence diagnosis and procedure codes.
  • Abstract admission source, admission type, disposition, and admitting, attending, and procedure attending physicians.
  • Select codes in computer-assisted coding or encoder software after reviewing information in the electronic medical record system.
  • Interface abstracted and coded information with the IHIS Resolute Billing system.
  • Address coding and abstracting edits to support complete and accurate coding and MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment for hospital reimbursement.
  • Maintain department productivity and quality standards.
  • Maintain an approved work schedule and submit a weekly volume log.
  • Review Coding Clinic and CPT Assistant materials as needed to support education and compliance with official coding guidelines.
  • Attend monthly coding meetings and coding education sessions for updates on coding guidelines and related issues.
