  • The individual must understand the needs of community college students.
  • The individual must be able to manage a classroom, organize and present material, design lessons and activities, and monitor student behavior and performance.
  • The individual must follow instructions and meet deadlines.
  • The individual must recognize students’ strengths and weaknesses in the discipline and provide learning-focused feedback.
  • The individual must evaluate student work fairly using Department guidelines.

  • The individual must demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching, excellent interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, patience, and flexibility.
  • The applicant must provide evidence of fluency in American Sign Language.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare and teach classes during scheduled times.
  • Develop a syllabus using the assigned syllabus shell, including evaluation procedures and an assignment calendar aligned with the course outline.
  • Prepare lesson plans and conduct classes using Department-approved texts.
  • Follow Department guidelines for course content and teaching best practices.
  • Meet classes on all scheduled dates, on time, and for the fully allotted time.
  • Respect Owens Community College Standards for Web Instruction when teaching online.
  • Use appropriate classroom-management techniques and technology.
  • Create and evaluate assignments, evaluative measures, and activities appropriate to the class.
  • Assign grades and return graded work in a timely manner, generally within one week.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and report attendance by published deadlines.
  • Maintain an accurate electronic grade book.
  • Submit final grades and electronic copies of grade books and attendance records to the Records Office and Department course-management site by the deadline.
  • Administer course evaluations as instructed by the College.
  • Use the College course-management system for assigned courses and Department matters.
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite and other approved, Owens-system-compatible programs.
  • Submit requested electronic documents, including syllabi, grade books, attendance records, and other required files, to the Department course-management site.
  • Access Owens email daily and read and reply to required messages within 48 hours.
  • Check the campus mailbox weekly.
  • Respond to student inquiries outside class in a timely manner and meet with students outside class when necessary.
  • Attend Department and College workshops, training sessions, and development activities as needed.
  • Attend Department and College meetings as necessary.
  • Participate in student-learning assessment activities.
  • Perform other assigned departmental duties.
  • Support the College, School of Liberal Arts, and their respective missions and visions.
  • Display professional and collegial behavior toward students, colleagues, supervisors, and the college community.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master’s Degree in American Sign Language is preferred.
  • A Master’s Degree in a related field with 18 graduate hours in American Sign Language is preferred.
  • One term of teaching experience, including developing lesson plans and assessments, is preferred.
