LocalStack provides a cloud service emulator that lets developers run a full AWS environment on their own machines. It works by emulating more than 100 AWS services locally (often via Docker), so developers can build, test, and validate cloud apps offline, including infrastructure as code, CI/CD workflows, and serverless configurations. It differentiates itself through its open-source heritage, broad service coverage, and a strong focus on developer productivity and local testing, enabling faster iterations and reduced cloud costs. Its goal is to speed up cloud development, lower cloud spend, and broaden testing capabilities, with plans to extend emulation to other clouds like Snowflake and Azure.

LocalStack, a Zurich-based local cloud development company, has added support for AWS Lambda Web Functions, which AWS released on October 12, 2026. Developers and AI agents can now test serverless web applications in a local sandbox from the first day the feature is available. Traditional serverless functions process events one at a time. Web Functions run as standard HTTP servers, and each environment handles many requests at once. Teams can use familiar frameworks and stop paying for CPU while an app waits on databases or AI models. Support is available today to LocalStack for AWS customers. LocalStack will hold a webinar with the AWS Lambda team on October 22.
LocalStack has acquired WonderTwin AI, a provider of local application emulators for services including GitHub, HubSpot, PostHog and Stripe. The deal addresses bottlenecks in AI-native software development, where shared sandbox environments struggle to support the scale and concurrency required when AI agents build code. WonderTwin AI's emulators simulate third-party applications on local infrastructure, allowing developers and AI agents to test integrations without connecting to live APIs. LocalStack already provides local cloud development platforms that simulate AWS and Snowflake behaviour. The combined offering will enable AI-native software engineers to validate entire application stacks locally, avoiding the complexity and risks of connecting to live production services. WonderTwin AI founder Tela Andrews said AI agents had "completely broken" traditional SaaS testing environments, making emulation necessary.

LocalStack releases blueprint for AI agents. June 11, 2026 LocalStack released a blueprint enabling AI agents to operate LocalStack's local cloud sandbox environments for testing and validating production application behavior without requiring access to provision live cloud infrastructure. "Testing and validating cloud behavior is rapidly becoming the bottleneck in AI-assisted software development," said Waldemar Hummer, co-founder and CTO of LocalStack. "As AI agents generate more code, they also create greater demand for efficient and reliable testing. By removing cloud dependencies from this stage of the workflow, software teams can unlock faster feedback cycles, lower costs and greater scalability. This release makes it easier for our community to extend the benefits of local cloud development to the AI agents supporting their pipelines today." LocalStack simulates the public cloud environment in a lightweight container that runs on the customer's self-hosted infrastructure so agents can validate how the application will behave in production without deploying to the cloud. In addition to removing the delays, costs and security risks of running ephemeral dev and test environments in the cloud, the containerized nature of the environment makes it easier to surface defects and streamline debugging tasks. With the new blueprint, agents can leverage their existing application code and Infrastructure-as-Code resources to deploy dev and test environments locally and take advantage of LocalStack's advanced capabilities for testing and debugging applications. Activities agents can perform include: - Provisioning environments to the local container so agents can test and validate application behavior in a production-like environment without access to a cloud account - Running AWS CLI commands against the local container to push code updates as the agent would in a cloud environment - Snapshotting, saving and restoring the state of the local environment so agents can reproduce specific environment conditions for testing, debugging and continuity - Generating, testing and reviewing failed IAM policies in the local environment leveraging LocalStack's proprietary security testing features - Inspecting application traces, spans, events, and IAM evaluations to surface bugs that emerge as a result of interactions between AWS services in the application environment - Simulating outages, faults and other disruptions to test application resiliency in an offline environment Industry news. LocalStack has released a blueprint enabling AI agents to simulate cloud environments locally for pre-production development and testing. The solution allows agents to operate in LocalStack's local cloud sandbox environments, validating production application behaviour without provisioning live cloud infrastructure. The containerised system runs on customers' self-hosted infrastructure, eliminating provisioning delays, cloud costs and security risks associated with cloud-based testing environments. AI agents can deploy environments locally using existing application code and Infrastructure-as-Code resources. Key capabilities include provisioning local environments, running AWS CLI commands, snapshotting environment states, testing IAM policies and simulating outages. LocalStack co-founder Waldemar Hummer said testing cloud behaviour is becoming a bottleneck in AI-assisted software development, and removing cloud dependencies enables faster feedback cycles and greater scalability.
