Buc-ee's growth stalls as household penetration dips to 33.3%

Buc-ee's expansion may be losing steam despite strong customer satisfaction. The Texas-based convenience store chain saw household penetration slip from 33.5% to 33.3% during the 12-month period ending 31 July, according to research firm Numerator. Private label purchases also dropped by 3 million households over the same period. The retailer's share of petrol and convenience store trips fell by half a point, whilst competitors Wawa and Sheetz each gained 0.7 points. Buc-ee's currently attracts more than 210 million annual visits across its 50-plus locations in 14 states. Despite the slowdown, customer satisfaction remains high. Visitors gave Buc-ee's a net satisfaction score of 90, well above the industry benchmark of 84. Two-thirds of shoppers rate the store environment as pleasant.

Buc-ee's founder suggests conservative states to remain focus for expansion

Buc-ee's founder Arch "Beaver" Aplin III suggested the travel centre chain will focus future expansion on conservative-led states. Speaking at the grand opening of a new location in Benton, Arkansas, last week, Aplin said the company prefers "conservative, business-friendly" states with strong workforces. "Life's too short to try to build in places that people don't appreciate what you're bringing," Aplin told attendees. The chain operates in 14 states and has additional locations under construction in 16 states, only one-third of which have Democratic governors. Buc-ee's previously withdrew from plans to build in Palmer Lake, Colorado, following public opposition and environmental concerns about the site's location in a major conservation corridor.

Buc-ee's CEO targets 'conservative' states for expansion as Indiana locations await approval

Buc-ee's CEO Arch Aplin III has indicated the convenience store chain prefers expanding in "conservative, business-friendly states" with strong workforces. Speaking at a new Arkansas location, Aplin said the company is focused on markets where its presence is appreciated. Indiana appears to fit that profile, with two Buc-ee's locations listed as "coming soon" on the company's website. One is proposed in Greenwood and remains in early planning stages, whilst another is planned for Whitestown. The expansion comments come as Buc-ee's faces controversy over trademark lawsuits against small businesses. The company recently sued Beaver's Mini Mart in Ohio over logo similarities, prompting Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to call the lawsuit "ridiculous".

Buc-ee's sues Ohio mini mart over beaver branding amid expansion and $500K parody challenge

Buc-ee's has filed a federal trademark lawsuit against Beaver's Mini Mart, a family-owned shop in Beavercreek, Ohio. The travel centre chain claims the store's name, beaver mascot and branding could confuse customers, alleging trademark infringement and unfair competition. This marks the latest in a series of legal actions by Buc-ee's to protect its brand. In May, the company sued Georgia's Teddy's Market, arguing the names could cause confusion because both contain six letters and two syllables. The lawsuits come as Buc-ee's expands rapidly across the United States. Two new locations opened in August in San Marcos, Texas, and Benton, Arkansas. A Murfreesboro, Tennessee site is scheduled to open on 16 November, with further locations planned through 2031.
