About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of total programme management experience, including 2–3 or more years leading complex, multi-workstream initiatives or portfolios; experience at a £10 million or greater scale is preferred.
  • A proven track record leading long-term initiatives of 12 or more months end-to-end, from initial scoping and control setup through tolerance management, issue and decision resolution, active oversight, assurance, and closure.
  • Experience in a startup or similarly high-stakes setting leading risk and issue management, tolerance setting, dependency mapping, and financial controls in fast-moving, high-ambiguity environments.
  • Experience influencing senior leaders and governance boards, with executive communication and briefing skills.
  • Engagement skills in interviewing, facilitation, mediation, and presenting.
  • Ability to turn abstract strategy into concrete operational delivery through high ownership and decisive problem-solving.
  • Aptitude for driving operational efficiency through custom automations and AI integration, establishing reusable process improvements across teams while ensuring compliance with risk frameworks and governance policies.

Responsibilities

  • Mobilise and lead non-technical delivery across complex, multi-workstream R&D programmes, maintaining accountability for delivery against agreed outcomes, timelines, budget allocations, and risk parameters from discovery through closure.
  • Co-design programme frameworks, solicitations, and milestone philosophies in alignment with Programme Director strategy.
  • Establish evaluation criteria, oversee progress reviews, and drive performance against contractual milestones with Science & Technology Leads.
  • Apply active management principles across portfolios, proactively manage risks, assumptions, issues, and dependencies, identify systemic risks, and execute course corrections, pivots, or contract terminations as needed.
  • Identify and manage programme risks, maintain risk registers, manage change control, ensure audit-ready compliance, and track project and programme spending alongside Finance Specialists.
  • Partner with Programme Directors from discovery through execution, translating scientific ambitions into robust, fundable programme architectures.
  • Provide constructive challenge, stress-test assumptions, evaluate delivery trade-offs, and align leadership on high-impact outcomes and strategic goals.
  • Serve as the senior operational bridge between Programme Teams and Procurement, PMO, Finance, Legal, and Communications; own key dependencies, set boundary limits, and remove organisational bottlenecks.
  • Lead engagement with senior external stakeholders, creator consortia, activation partners, and international research hubs, including site visits, workshops, and strategic community-building initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate real-time information in programme tracking tools and identify process and efficiency improvements.
  • Maintain a clear view of delivery status across workstreams, dependencies, risks and issues, decisions, and actions; escalate issues and drive resolutions.
  • Provide insights and data to the Project Management Office to support governance and portfolio management.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in related sectors such as R&D, science, technology, deep tech, engineering, government, non-profit, or innovation funding ecosystems.
