Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in an occupational therapy curriculum accredited by ACOTE standards is required.
  • Initial registration from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy is required.
  • A valid and unencumbered occupational therapy license is required in the state of practice.
  • Availability to travel to and temporarily reside in locations outside the therapist's primary home is required.
Responsibilities
  • Travel nationwide for 13-week assignments and work in various settings.
  • Organize and conduct occupational therapy programs at the assigned location to facilitate rehabilitation.
  • Direct patient participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance.
  • Facilitate learning of skills and functions essential for adaptation and productivity.
  • Supervise Occupational Therapy Assistants, temporary licensees, students, and support personnel as necessary or applicable in accordance with state licensure requirements and professional standards.
  • Deliver rehabilitation services effectively and efficiently while adhering to the established plan of care, department and patient schedules, and documentation requirements.
  • Attend and contribute to patient care, staffing conferences, and related meetings.
  • Make referrals to other disciplines and agencies to address comprehensive patient needs.
  • Consult with rehabilitation team members to select appropriate therapeutic regimens based on each patient's needs and capabilities.
  • Adapt programs and plans of care to individual patient needs.
  • Promote a safe environment and eliminate fire and safety hazards.
  • Order supplies and equipment as necessary.
  • Clean, maintain, identify, and report equipment requiring repair.
  • Ensure patients and families receive high-quality service in a caring environment that recognizes individual needs and rights.
  • Screen, examine, and evaluate patients; establish diagnoses; identify impairments; determine predicted improvement and treatment timelines; identify precautions and contraindications; and design and plan care.
  • Develop treatment goals and methods with patients and caregivers, implement occupational therapy treatment plans, and complete related documentation and record keeping.
  • Apply therapeutic techniques addressing cognitive skills, muscle strength, coordination, endurance, mobility, perceptual abilities, sensory awareness, sitting and standing tolerance, balance, activities of daily living, joint protection, work simplification, orientation, and physical agent modalities.
  • Design, fabricate, fit, and apply adaptive devices, including orthotics and prosthetics, and train patients in their use.
  • Select activities suited to each individual's physical and mental capacity, intelligence level, and interests.
  • Instruct patients in skills and techniques required for functional activities and evaluate progress, attitudes, and behavior related to rehabilitative potential.
  • Perform routine reexaminations to modify or progress treatment plans.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
