About the company

Block runs Square, which sells card readers and checkout software to businesses, and Cash App, an app people use to send, save, spend, and borrow money. Its first product, a square card reader that plugged into a phone's headphone jack in 2010, let street vendors and other small sellers accept credit cards. Square earns a fee on each card payment and charges for software, while Cash App makes money from its debit card, short-term loans, Afterpay installment plans, and bitcoin sales. Block also owns the music streaming service TIDAL and builds bitcoin hardware, including the Bitkey wallet and Proto mining rigs. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey co-founded the company in 2009, and its main office is in Oakland, California.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Lending drives growth: Cash App gross profit rose 31% in the June 2026 quarter as consumer loan volume jumped 59%.
  • Stock grants have outperformed PayPal's: Block shares rose 16% from January to early October 2026, while PayPal's fell 6%.
  • Office time is optional: Block has no headquarters, and for most roles staff choose where they work.

What critics are saying

  • Job security is weaker: citing AI tools, Block cut over 4,000 jobs, about 40% of staff, in February 2026.
  • A Justice Department probe hangs over Cash App: Block set aside $526 million by June 2026 to resolve it.
  • Cash App's user base has stalled: 59 million monthly users in June 2026, up just 3% in a year.

What makes Block unique

  • Most profit comes from consumers, not merchants: Cash App made 62% of Block's gross profit in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Engineers work alongside AI agents: agents helped write and review nearly all of Block's live code changes in June 2026.
  • Block owns a bank: Square Financial Services, chartered in Utah, lends to sellers who repay from each card sale.

Block unveils Dessa, a full-duplex speech AI that Jack Dorsey says sounds human

Block cofounder Jack Dorsey on Friday introduced Dessa, a speech model he calls "the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built." A small AI research team at Block, led by Ragavan Thurairatnam, built it. Dessa is a true speech-to-speech model: audio goes in and audio comes out, with no conversion to text. The team says it trained the model from scratch on human conversation alone, with no books, web pages, or pretrained models. It is full-duplex, so it listens and talks at the same time. It runs faster than real time and works locally on a MacBook Pro M4 Max or better. Dessa is not public. Block is giving a small group of AI safety researchers early access before any wider release.

Command palette. Jack Dorsey's Block has introduced Dessa, an AI model trained from scratch on human conversation alone, positioning it as a speech-to-speech system built without text-based training data. To demonstrate its capabilities, the company shared several sample exchanges that highlight both natural dialogue flow and occasional awkward, uncanny moments. In one interaction, the model mistakenly calls the speaker "Ronaldo," while another clip shows it taking part in a voice-based guessing game. The Dessa website includes additional demonstrations, including a conversation about Christopher Nolan's films that drifts into an unexpected discussion of Bryan Singer's Superman movies, as well as a reply to a user planning a surprise trip to Paris that comes across as emotionally expressive. The site also compares Dessa with OpenAI's GPT-Live-1 voice model, suggesting that Dessa sounds more natural in some exchanges. Block describes Dessa as a true speech-to-speech model whose knowledge comes entirely from human speech. The company says it can run locally on a MacBook Pro M4 Max or better, signaling an emphasis on accessibility for personal computing environments. Block said the model was created for three main reasons: curiosity, improving understanding between humans and AI, and advancing AI safety. It added that a small group of AI safety researchers will receive early access to the model. This news is intelligently aggregated by AI to deliver industry updates efficiently. It does not constitute opinions or advice.

Can AI talk like A human? Block says its Dessa model can.

Can AI talk like A human? Block says its Dessa model can. The model supports real-time voice conversations without text-based training, while Block plans to provide early access to a select group of AI safety researchers AI Generated Block, the financial technology company led by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, has introduced Dessa, an artificial intelligence (AI) voice model, which has been trained exclusively on human speech without using text. The company describes it as the world's first AI system that can support realistic, real-time conversations after training entirely on spoken interaction. "Dessa is the world's first AI you can have a realistic live conversation with that was trained only on human speech," Block said in its announcement. According to Block, Dessa can listen and respond in real time without first converting speech into text. This approach differs from conventional voice AI systems, which often convert spoken words into text before processing a response. The model processes audio directly and can respond to conversational cues such as tone, pauses, laughter and sarcasm. These capabilities could help it interpret nuances that text-based systems may not fully capture. A Different Approach To Voice AI Dessa uses a speech-to-speech architecture that allows it to listen and speak simultaneously. This design supports a more continuous exchange between a person and an AI system, rather than a sequence of separate speech recognition, text processing and speech generation steps. Block has also highlighted the model's training method. The company said it trained Dessa on a single NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 system. It also claimed that the model learned language from far fewer words than large language models typically require. The approach offers an alternative to text-centred AI training. Instead of relying primarily on written language, Dessa learns from spoken interaction. Its practical value will depend on how accurately it interprets speech, responds to conversational cues and maintains context during live exchanges. However, the model's capabilities will require further assessment. Demonstrations have shown that it can make errors, including mistakes in identifying speakers. Such limitations remain important considerations for voice-based AI systems, particularly in applications that require accurate identification or reliable responses. Early Access For Researchers Block plans to provide access to a small group of AI safety researchers. The company has not announced general commercial availability, pricing or an application programming interface (API) for wider developer use. The limited release will allow researchers to examine the model's behaviour and assess its capabilities and limitations. Dessa enters a competitive field in which technology companies are developing AI systems that can communicate through speech with greater speed and naturalness. Its broader significance will depend on whether it can deliver reliable conversations beyond demonstrations and whether its audio-first approach offers practical advantages over existing voice AI systems.

Meta, Barclays, Block cut thousands of jobs as firms shift spending to AI

Companies are cutting jobs and shifting money from staff to artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, as the cost of meeting booming AI demand reshapes budgets. Meta will lay off about 8,000 workers, or 10% of its workforce, and leave about 6,000 jobs unfilled. It expects 2026 expenses to reach as much as $169 billion, driven by infrastructure and AI talent. Block is cutting more than 4,000 of its 10,000-plus employees; its shares are up 19% this year. Kroger will lay off 3,000 corporate staff over three years, and Barclays plans to cut 5,000 jobs, about 5% of its workforce. Snap is eliminating about 16% of staff, or 1,000 jobs. Coinbase is cutting about 14%, and Microsoft is offering buyouts to about 8,750 US employees.
